Susan Sarandon got caught in a censorial dustup following the Sept. 11 attacks.
In 2003, her outspoken opposition towards President George W. Bush’s War on Terror led to an uninvitation from a “Bull Durham” celebration, which also happened to Tim Robbins, her romantic partner at that time. Neither of them chose to remain quiet about the situation.
That was then.
In recent years, Sarandon has stood down while serious free speech assaults rocked the culture.
Examples?
- The Twitter Files attacked conservative thought on a massive platform
- Cancel Culture scolds policed jokes on the stand-up landscape
- A U.S. president got booted from several social media platforms
- Artists self-censored by erasing work featuring problematic comedy like “blackface”-adjacent material
- Woke activists insisted Identity Politics override casting decisions
- The Biden administration told Big Tech platforms to censor “malinformation”
- Sensitivity readers erased passages from books by Ian Fleming, Roald Dahl and Agatha Christie
That’s a partial list.
Sarandon wasn’t alone in her silence. Most Hollywood activists also took a rhetorical knee.
The censorship did not affect liberal perspectives or movements. They were unresponsive when it came to defending the suppressed, but they took action when far-left literature was prohibited from public school curriculums.
Harsh? Is there another explanation?
Currently, the Academy Award recipient has taken up a fresh advocacy – Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist, who is under suspicion for causing unrest at Columbia University.
On March 9, 2025, in accordance with President Trump’s executive orders aimed at combating anti-Semitism, and working alongside the Department of State, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement apprehended Mahmoud Khalil. Khalil, a previous graduate student at Columbia University, was known for his activities linked to Hamas, an organization recognized as terrorist by the U.S. ICE and the Department of State are dedicated to upholding President Trump’s executive orders and safeguarding American national security.
Recall this fact: On October 7, Hamas was responsible for the deaths of approximately 1,200 innocent people and the abduction of many more. Throughout the last year and a half, this terrorist organization has taken the lives of some hostages, tragically including children.
Not only was the October 7th incident an act of violence, but it also perpetrated unimaginable atrocities against women. In the powerful 2024 documentary titled “Screams Before Silence,” survivors were given a platform to share their experiences and tell their stories.
Sarandon previously suggested said atrocities didn’t happen.
Currently, I’m standing firm in the battle to uphold Khalil’s First Amendment rights, despite the fact that he isn’t a native-born American but holds a U.S. Green Card.
Or was, if the Trump administration has its way.

As a movie enthusiast, I gathered with supporters of Khalil on Saturday to vociferously denounce the current Trump administration’s policies and express my concerns over the possibility of Khalil’s expulsion.
It’s about free speech. Of course.
In 2023, her remarks regarding the Palestinian cause led to significant controversy, ultimately resulting in the loss of her talent representative, and this has nothing to do with her ties to Sarandon’s wardrobe accessories.
Many individuals currently experience fear similar to that felt by Muslims within this nation, due to their Jewish identity.
Now, an emboldened Sarandon is speaking out once more.
In a statement made just a few days following Israel’s renewed military action against Gaza, as Hamas declined to free all remaining captives, Sarandon emphasized that what is unfolding in Palestine should never be accepted as routine or acceptable, which is why we are gathered here tonight.
The actress read from an essay tied to what’s happening both stateside and in Gaza.

This issue has become personal, it’s not just about people in the Middle East, but it concerns everyone, including you. It involves your rights and your ability to express dissatisfaction with corrupt leaders without fear.
No matter how much we might want to distance ourselves, the turmoil in Gaza is an intimate part of our lives. It’s as if the bloodshed from the conflict has reached our doorsteps, and the images of dead and wounded children are now within our homes, in our living rooms and kitchens. These distressing scenes have been brought to us by those who hold power in our government and their allies.
