Susumu Kamijo Presents ‘Table of Us' at Perrotin Hong Kong

As a connoisseur of art who has traversed the globe in search of the next great masterpiece, I must say that my heart skips a beat at the prospect of witnessing Susumu Kamijo’s new exhibition, “Table of Us,” at Perrotin Hong Kong. Having had the privilege of being enchanted by his whimsical canvases adorned with poodles and sentient forms, I eagerly await this foray into still life.

This weekend, Susumu Kamijo, a Brooklyn-based artist, will be unveiling his latest solo exhibition titled “Table of Us” at Perrotin Hong Kong. In this new display, Kamijo ventures into the realm of still life, breathing fresh life into the genre with his unique blend of candidness and mystery. Recognized for his abstract, whimsical depictions of poodles and other sentient beings, the artist delves into a more personal space, combining flowers and creatures in fantastical yet familiar compositions.

Kamijo’s latest collection of still-life paintings stirs up a wistful daydream reminiscent of carefree summer days spent with his grandparents. From the sweet taste of watermelon to the delight of festival evenings, these memories are vividly captured. At first glance, these pieces appear as traditional still lifes focusing on items such as Morandi-style vases and goldfish. However, upon closer inspection, they display intricate textures and compositions, adding depth to their simplicity.

In the artwork titled “Summer Blossoms” (2024), there’s a lively spirit infused with a subtle undertone of risk. On the other hand, “Three Fishes and Cosmos” (2024) delves into ideas about mortality and home life. The fishes in this piece seem to fluctuate between vitality and stillness, suggesting the conflict between life captured on canvas and its untamed originality.

The exhibition encourages visitors to reflect on the meaning behind displays containing flowers, fish, and meals, which resemble Matisse’s ornamental techniques. Each item seems enclosed in a preserving coating, kept from deterioration before decay sets in. Susumu Kamijo’s Table of Us will debut at Perrotin’s Hong Kong gallery on November 16, 2024. The exhibition will run until January 4, 2025.
