As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of “S.W.A.T.”, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation every time a new episode airs. The latest installment, “Gang Unit,” has left me with an intriguing thought: could this be setting up for a spin-off?

In this episode titled “Gang Unit,” which boasts a stellar cast, the team of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department finds themselves in the thick of things as a spree of violent crimes sweeps across Los Angeles. This series of drug-money-driven stash house raids stirs up tension between Hondo (Shemar Moore) and the LASD chief, but they ultimately join forces to combat this threat. The situation takes a chilling turn when the unidentified killers start offing their witnesses, creating a dangerous game of cat and mouse. As events unfold, it’s revealed that the source of the trouble lies within the department itself — corrupt cops are orchestrating the chaos while pretending to be innocent.
In this scenario, the LASD, who appear arrogant in comparison to Hondo, could provide an interesting perspective for a spin-off series. Fans have often speculated about the possibility of a “S.W.A.T” spin-off originating from another law enforcement unit within Los Angeles. Although the show has not yet produced any spin-offs and CBS has made no official announcements regarding future additions, fans remain optimistic that a new series may emerge from the original concept someday.
SWAT hasn’t launched any spin-offs — yet
Previously, as an avid fan of “S.W.A.T.”, I’ve pondered if the seventh episode of Season 4, titled “Under Fire”, served as a trial run for a firefighter spin-off in Los Angeles. However, it appears that such speculation was unfounded. A writer from the show’s team, u/SWATWriter, clarified later on that this wasn’t the original intention. Instead, they had started developing a similar storyline during Season 3, which unfortunately got halted due to Covid-19, and subsequently picked it up again in Season 4.
For unlaunched pilot episodes, enthusiasts of “S.W.A.T.” are hopeful that Jim Street (played by Alex Russell) and his Long Beach unit could spearhead a spin-off someday. Fans miss him dearly, having left in Season 7. Additionally, u/FromMiddleEarth suggested that Dom Luca (Kenny Johnson’s character who also departed during Season 7) might headline his own spin-off, potentially in a mentorship role overseeing a police academy.
The original “S.W.A.T.” was spun off from a series called “The Rookies,” and although a spin-off named “The Running Man” wasn’t picked up, it still had one backdoor pilot. Consequently, the rebooted version of “S.W.A.T.” has a substantial television history backing it up. It’s quite possible that it could extend this legacy by producing its own spin-off series.
