Directed by David Michôd, this film has already generated considerable awards attention before its world premiere at TIFF 2025, not only due to the gripping nature of Martin’s true-life story, but also because of Sweeney’s impressive physical and emotional metamorphosis on screen.

Initially known as “The Coal Miner’s Daughter,” Christy Martin made history by becoming one of the first women to receive widespread acclaim in a male-dominated sport. Her 1996 fight on Mike Tyson’s undercard served as a turning point for women’s boxing, garnering it more mainstream attention. Throughout her career, she amassed a record of 49 wins, 7 losses, and 3 draws, with 31 knockouts. However, Christy’s journey extended far beyond the ring. After enduring an attempted assassination by her abusive husband and trainer, Jim Martin (who was later imprisoned for 25 years), Christy became a powerful voice for domestic violence survivors. She founded Christy’s Champs, a nonprofit organization dedicated to aiding victims of domestic abuse.

The movie doesn’t hesitate to tackle the gravity of her narrative. Instead, it delves profoundly into the peaks and valleys: from glossy magazine covers and title belts to struggles with addiction, hidden identity, and close brushes with death. Fundamentally, Christy is a story about power — power that’s lost, regained, and reshaped.

The screenplay, authored by Michôd and Foulkes, reportedly blends the intense personal suffering of its characters with the thrilling backdrop of the sports world, making Martin’s resilience the central focus. With Martin herself contributing to the filmmaking process and Sweeney co-producing through her Fifty-Fifty Films label, Christy appears to be both a depiction of a fighter and a powerful biopic. The movie is slated for its premiere in September 2025 at the Toronto International Film Festival, but the worldwide release date remains undetermined.
