Tallulah Willis Says She Thought She Was “Very Broken” Before Receiving Autism Diagnosis: “I Really Hated Myself”

As a gamer who’s been through a roller coaster of emotions with my own characters, I can empathize with Tallulah Willis’ journey. Just like leveling up a character, learning about one’s autism later in life is a revelation that brings both challenges and opportunities for growth. It’s like discovering a hidden skill point or unlocking a secret ability that changes the game completely.

As a gamer speaking out, I recently shared that I was diagnosed with autism at the age of 29. It’s been quite a journey, but I’m proud to say I’ve embraced who I am.

On a Wednesday visit to NBC’s TODAY show, the entrepreneur and artist openly talked about her journey after receiving her diagnosis, sharing how it brought clarity to her life.

She shared that for many years she had been incorrectly diagnosed, not receiving her actual diagnosis until she was 29. This is a common occurrence, particularly among adult women. As such, everything about this experience is still quite fresh to her. In the past year, she’s been learning the terminology and managing her condition, as she is high-functioning autistic, with sensory issues being her main challenge rather than communication difficulties.

In March, Willis disclosed her diagnosis, sharing that she discovered it the previous summer and was now finally at ease to make the announcement. Upon learning she was on the autism spectrum, she confided that it was a very emotional experience for her.

She confided in the hosts that she felt a sense of liberation. In truth, she had harbored intense self-loathing, believing herself to be deeply flawed and fractured. Yet, discovering that aspects of herself which she deemed as ailments, mistakes, or simply too much for this world are actually acceptable, just needing perhaps a bit more resources, brought her immense relief.

The youngest child of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis, an artist, received a diagnosis of aphasia in 2022. As the illness progressed, her condition evolved into frontotemporal dementia, which her family publicly disclosed in 2023.

Willis candidly discusses the hardships her father has faced and how she and her family manage in such circumstances. In a personal essay for Vogue, she admitted to being aware of his troubles long before he was officially diagnosed. During her interview on TODAY, she shared more details about his condition, mentioning that he’s currently stable.

She said, ‘There are difficult days, yet the love is abundant, and it’s taught me never to underestimate a single moment. I truly believe we’d make great friends.’ She added, ‘I sense he takes great pride in me.’
