As a long-time fan of gritty, character-driven dramas that delve deep into social issues, I can confidently say that Taylor Sheridan’s latest offering, Landman, is right up my alley. With its all-star cast and the reunion of Sheridan and Thornton, it promises to be a compelling watch for fans who have grown tired of superhero and video game adaptations.
Since Yellowstone signs off in December 2024, fans of Taylor Sheridan should promptly explore his latest dramatic series, Landman. Debuting on Paramount+ on November 17, 2024, Landman features Billy Bob Thornton as Tommy Norris, a West Texas oil company executive skilled in crisis management. Two episodes will be released weekly, with the first season of 10 episodes scheduled to end on January 12, 2025 – four weeks after Yellowstone’s planned finale.
As a movie enthusiast, it feels bittersweet that Yellowstone will bid farewell to Kevin Costner on November 10, 2024. This seems like the perfect moment for me to journey from the chilly landscapes of Montana to the warmer climes of Texas, eagerly following in the footsteps of acclaimed writer and showrunner Taylor Sheridan to uncover his next exciting project. Coincidentally, Landman’s geopolitical drama offers a captivating TV alternative to Yellowstone this coming fall and winter.
What Is Landman About?
Taylor Sheridan collaborated with Christian Wallace in creating the series Landman, which was inspired by Wallace’s podcast, Boomtown. The story unfolds in modern West Texas’s Permian Basin, focusing on the tumultuous oil industry and the diverse individuals who are connected to it. Billy Bob Thornton stars as Tommy Norris, a crisis manager for a local oil company, who also grapples with maintaining harmony between his estranged wife and his lively teenage daughter in his personal life.
As a film enthusiast, I find that the intricate blend of ambition, capitalism, avarice, and industrialization sets the stage for a tangled geopolitical landscape in much of Sheridan’s work, along with the significant environmental consequences of oil drilling within the nation. To top it off, fans of ‘Yellowstone’ and its prequel series ‘1883’ will undoubtedly relish the fact that Sheridan is once again collaborating with Billy Bob Thornton – a partnership I believe to be an outstanding match given their shared Southern sensibilities as directors and actors.
In the second episode of “1883,” titled “Behind Us, a Cliff,” Thornton portrayed U.S. Marshal Jim Courtright, leaving viewers intrigued by his brief interaction with Sheridan. Now that Thornton is leading the way in “Landman,” fans of “Yellowstone” will need to travel from Montana to Texas to catch more engaging western political and economic drama. This isn’t even considering the captivating ensemble cast.
Who Stars in Taylor Sheridan’s Landman?
In Landman, Ali Larter takes on the role of Tommy’s former spouse, Angela Norris, while Michelle Randolph portrays their 17-year-old daughter, Ainsley Norris. Ainsley, who is strong-willed, promises to bring domestic challenges for Tommy that he will need to handle outside his work time. Jacob Lofland acts as Cooper Norris, the son shared by Tommy and Angela. This international cast, including Thornton, significantly enhances the show’s appeal.
In his professional life, Tommy is closely associated with Monty Miller, a powerful and influential Texas oil tycoon who shares a deep history with him. Following her critically acclaimed role in the movie ‘The Substance’, Demi Moore takes on the part of Monty’s wife, Cami Miller. As stated by Demi Moore during an interview with Vanity Fair:
Cami isn’t part of the business world, yet they manage their whole life remarkably well. As a pair, they have collaboratively constructed an empire and nurtured their family.
Moore provided extra details about the Millers in Landman, adding:
At one instance, Jon expressed to me, “I believe this could be my first role where I portray a character who’s in a genuine relationship, filled with love, devotion, and affection.” Her concern revolves around her family and the social dynamics they navigate. It’s about navigating the highs and lows of maintaining his well-being, health, and safety.
In this production, we have some new characters joining the cast. Andy Garcia takes on the role of Galino, a powerful socialite. Michael Peña becomes Armando, an oilfield worker. Mark Collie portrays Sheriff Walt Joeberg, James Jordan is oil engineer Dale Bradley, and Kayla Wallace plays local woman Rebecca Savage. Paulina Chavez brings life to Ariana, a woman impacted by oil drilling, while Colm Fiore mysteriously appears as Nathan. Robyn Lively, Dani Raen, Mustafa Speaks, Octavio Rodriguez, J.R. Villarreal, J.J. Thompson, Mitchell Slaggert, and Alex Meraz complete the cast of the movie titled Landman.
Why Yellowstone Fans Must Watch Landman
Landman presents a thoughtful, vintage drama that’s appealing to adults who yearn for something other than superhero or video game adaptations predominantly aimed at younger audiences. Sheridan excels when blending high-quality entertainment with profound undertones, as evidenced by critically and financially successful works such as Sicario, Wind River, Hell or High Water, and Yellowstone.
Movies similar to “Those Who Wish Me Dead,” which can be quite humorous in their distractions, still manage to evoke a sense of nostalgia reminiscent of the ’90s. They seamlessly blend urgent contemporary issues such as deforestation and climate change with thrilling action sequences that provide an escape. With Sheridan’s history of creativity, “Landman” has the potential to delve into deep geopolitical and socioeconomic matters, offering insights on the current disparity between the wealthy and the less fortunate.
As economic inequality widens in America, exploring the intersection of small-town Texas values and the billionaire oil boom again shows Sheridan’s socially conscious storytelling approach. Of course, Landman also provides an excellent alternative to Yellowstone, Sheridan’s flagship franchise that has several spin-offs in the works. The fifth and final Yellowstone season has begun airing on the Paramount Network, with the remaining episodes set to explore who took John Dutton’s life. As Yellowstone rides off into the sunset in 2024, Landman is the next best Taylor Sheridan show to drill into. Landman is available to stream on Paramount+.
