It’s rare to hear criticisms about the craftsmanship of Taylor Swift‘s song bridges, even in her most popular tunes, given that she’s not without flaws as a person or an artist. However, it seems these aspects often go unmentioned amidst discussions about her work and personal decisions.
In Western pop music, specifically within Swift’s repertoire, the bridge is a significant part of the structure, situated between the second and last choruses of a song. It’s often where the song takes a dramatic turn, either through a change in key or a shift in perspective if we consider the song as a story being told.
As a movie buff putting it in my own words: In Taylor Swift’s song “The Last Great American Dynasty,” one can clearly see a shift in narrative perspective that occurs when she sings, “then it was bought by me.” Previously, we were following the story of the original Holiday House owner. But once those words are sung, the tale transforms into a delightful account of Swift, reveling in her newfound ownership and making mischief, offering us a fresh and entertaining perspective.
In a poetic, thematic, and almost spiritual sense, Swift demonstrates her extraordinary skill in crafting bridges within her music. These sections often serve as the climax where she, or the character she’s depicting, reveals heartfelt, sometimes painful confessions. For instance, “Now I’m pleading for explanatory notes in the narrative of your life.” “Return my youth to me, it was mine to begin with.” Each line leading up to these emotional peaks serves as a gradual build-up. You tolerate me, yet I can’t fathom why I persist. You exploited me, and I long for that squandered time back.
In simpler terms, Taylor Swift’s bridges serve as the climax or turning point in her songs. They could be about acknowledging a mistake, regaining control, expressing a moral, or even leaving a hint of threat. For instance, “I might leave you, and maybe I will,” or “I’m never going to let you forget what you did.” These lines are memorable because that’s their purpose. Even ardent Swift fans might not recall every word, but the bridges tend to stay with us long after the song has ended. They are designed to linger in our minds even after the song is over.
As a film enthusiast, I must say that numerous contemporary artists master the art of musical bridges, but Taylor Swift stands out as one who does it exceptionally well. Her poetic flair is undeniable when scrutinizing her compositions’ bridges. If you put them to music, many of them are worthy contenders for awards in their own right.
