TCM Classic Film Festival to Honor George Stevens Jr. With the Robert Osborne Award

It was revealed on Saturday that Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Paul Thomas Anderson have reaffirmed their dedication to Turner Classic Movies. Additionally, George Stevens Jr. and Michael Schultz will receive recognition during the TCM Classic Film Festival taking place in April.

TCM announced that fresh installments of the show Two for One are set to air again starting in April. On Saturdays, Ben Mankiewicz and some filmmakers will jointly host a pair of films each night. Notable guests like Joe Dante, Kathy Bates, and Jamie Lee Curtis have been confirmed to appear.

I’m thrilled to share that TCM will keep honoring a unique star every month, starting with Elvis Presley as we mark what should have been his 90th birthday. We’ll also pay tribute to the likes of Peter Sellers, Angela Lansbury, Rock Hudson, Paul Newman, Tony Curtis, and Donald O’Connor on their 100th birthdays. And let’s not forget Dick Van Dyke, who we’ll celebrate in December for his centennial!

2025 will see appearances of George Raft, Barbara Stanwyck, Red Skelton, Mae West, Gary Cooper, and Merle Oberon as well.

This year marking its 31st edition, TCM plans to delve into topics such as Ladies of the ’80s, Summer Love Stories, Trust in Cinema, Young Audiences, Black Female Filmmakers, Movie Revelations, Western Genres, Horror Films, and Imperialism. It also intends to honor Asian American Pacific Islander Month, Pride Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, and many other significant occasions.

Audience members can eagerly anticipate another installment of “31 Days of Oscar,” beginning February 1st, featuring Dave Karger as the host; fresh movie restorations; and a brand-new documentary titled “Becoming Hitchcock“. Additionally, the popular podcast “The Plot Thickens” is set to return for its sixth season this coming summer.

I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be honored at the 16th TCM Classic Film Festival, happening from April 24-27 in Hollywood! This year, I’ll be receiving the Robert Osborne Award – an incredible honor recognizing those who have tirelessly worked to preserve the cinematic legacy of classic films for generations to come. Can’t wait to celebrate with fellow film enthusiasts!

The acclaimed filmmaker, Stevens – a writer, director, producer, playwright, author, and twice a Peabody Award winner who also founded the American Film Institute – will become the sixth recipient of this distinguished honor.

He’ll also be available to showcase a 4K restoration of the film “George Stevens: A Filmmaker’s Journey” (1984), which he authored and directed. This documentary is about his Academy Award-winning father, the director responsible for films such as “Giant” and “Gunga Din”, among other cinematic classics.

The event additionally honors people who have significantly influenced cinema through their work in Hollywood, and Schultz will receive recognitions for his films “Car Wash” (1976) and “The Last Dragon” (1986). The final honoree will be revealed at a later time.

This event will feature world debut restorations of the films “Beau Geste” from 1926, “The Enchanted Cottage” from 1945, “The Big Combo” from 1955, “Splendor in the Grass” from 1961, and “The Wiz” from 1978.

The following movies have been announced: “The Divorcee” from 1930, “Suspicion” in 1941, “The Talk of the Town” and “Brigadoon”, both from 1942, “Blackboard Jungle” (1955), “Gunman’s Walk” (1958), “The Time Machine” (1960), “2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968), “Jaws” (1975) and “Superman” (1978).

Or, in a more conversational tone:

Some of the movies that have been announced are “The Divorcee” from 1930, “Suspicion” in 1941, “The Talk of the Town” and “Brigadoon”, both from 1942, “Blackboard Jungle” (1955), “Gunman’s Walk” (1958), “The Time Machine” (1960), “2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968), “Jaws” (1975) and “Superman” (1978).

On Saturday, a special “Pop-Up” event related to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is happening at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan. Highlights include a discussion between Karger and Scorsese, Drew Barrymore and Jacqueline Stewart introducing a screening of the 1934 film Twentieth Century, which stars Drew’s grandfather, John Barrymore, and a reunion of Drew and Spielberg for a presentation of E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982).

Looking forward to an outstanding lineup of programming next year, we’re thrilled that the leading platform for cinema enthusiasts will still be showcasing top-notch classic films to viewers through various platforms such as live events, podcasts, and not forgetting our primary TCM channel. This was expressed by Mike De Luca and Pamela Abdy, co-Chairs & CEOs of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, in a statement.

We’re equally thankful for the ongoing collaboration with our esteemed filmmakers, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Paul Thomas Anderson. These three individuals are among TCM’s most passionate advocates.

A news release noted they will “remain as stewards to TCM through 2025.”
