As a seasoned movie buff with over two decades of film-watching under my belt, I must say that Barry Keoghan has been an absolute revelation in the world of cinema. His transformation from a relative unknown to a Hollywood powerhouse in just a few short years is nothing short of astounding. From his chilling portrayal of Joker in The Batman to his haunting performance in Eternals, this young Irish actor has proven time and again that he’s got the talent to tackle any role thrown at him.
In a mere few years, this actor has transformed from a largely unrecognized figure into an exceptional talent in Hollywood, impressing audiences with his roles in Marvel’s “Eternals”, a brief stint as the Joker in “The Batman”, and an unusual scene involving a bath plughole in “Saltburn”. Now, his latest film offers a grisly and intense portrayal of his violent revenge thriller.
Movies typically depicting rural farming communities may not often fit the mold of gripping thrillers, yet Bring Them Down seems to be challenging this notion, as it deviates from the stereotypical image of flat-caps and shepherds in Christopher Andrew’s directorial debut. Starring Christopher Abbott from Poor Things, this film revolves around Michael, the last son of a farming family who endures an irascible father, Ray. Haunted by a secret from his past, Michael becomes embroiled in a confrontation with another local farming family, headed by Gary and his son Jack (Keoghan). As old scars are reopened, events spiral out of control, altering the course of both families irrevocably.
In the United Kingdom and Ireland, the film “Bring Them Down,” distributed by MUBI following their success with Demi Moore’s body horror satire “The Substance,” will be released on February 7, 2025. Unfortunately, there is no information yet regarding its release in other international markets, including the U.S.
Barry Keoghan Recently Addressed a Joker Return
Although Bring Them Down appears to be a drastic shift from some of Keoghan’s other works, he might still create one of the most unsettling portrayals of Batman nemesis, the Joker, in Matt Reeves’ Batman universe. Hints about the Clown Prince of Gotham’s role were dropped in the movie snippets of the first film, leaving many questioning his presence in The Batman Part II. Lately, Keoghan has spoken about a potential comeback, stating:
If the chance arises, I would definitely be interested in delving deeper into this intriguing subject. However, so far, no one has reached out to me or provided any information about it.
Earlier speculations indicated that following the success of “The Penguin”, DC Studios might pursue another spinoff series centered around Joker. However, these rumors were denied by James Gunn. As of now, it’s uncertain if Keoghan will reappear in the DC universe again. Yet, considering the brief hint given earlier, it’s challenging to assume that the character won’t be given a more significant role somewhere in the future.
For now, I’m slated to make my next appearance in the intriguing musical thriller “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” inspired by The Weeknd’s sixth studio album, “The Immortal Man.” Additionally, I’ll be part of the cast for the sequel to “Peaky Blinders” and a crime thriller titled “Crime 101.” With “The Batman Part II” set to start filming next year, it appears my busy schedule might accommodate a reprise of the Joker role after all. So, let’s spark up those discussion flames once more!
