‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Gets New Creative Team with ‘American Born Chinese’ Creator Gene Luen Yang, Artist Freddie E. Williams II (Exclusive)

Gene Luen Yang, who won an Eisner award for his renowned graphic novel “American Born Chinese,” will now wield a katana sword as he tackles the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles project for IDW Publishing.

Yan, who is responsible for creating the award-winning tale “Superman Smashes the Klan“, has been appointed as the next author for the ongoing comic series, marking the start of a fresh chapter starting from issue number 13.

Freddie E. Williams II, who has previously worked on projects like Batman/TMNT, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Godzilla vs Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, is now set to take up the role as the lead artist for

As a gamer, I’m eagerly anticipating where the story will go next, picking up from Jason Aaron and Juan Ferrerya’s team. Last year, their back-to-basics approach revitalized this book to become a best-seller, and now, they’re wrapping things up with issue #12 in September. Come December, I can’t wait to dive into the new run by Yang and Williams!

As a kid, Yang used to watch the 1980s animated series with his sibling, then they would act out the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ escapades using their toy figures. He first encountered TMNT comics at a friend’s place and was astonished by the blend of intense martial arts action and bizarre, unexpected concepts, as he expressed in a statement.

Not only does he recognize the groundbreaking role these comics played in the world of indie comics, but he understands clearly that their contributions paved the way for future writers and artists.

Yang, who has worked on Marvel’s Shang-Chi mini-series and created DC’s Monkey Prince, expressed gratitude towards Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, the creators of TMNT. He acknowledged that their groundbreaking work in comics creation and business paved the way for many others like him. In fact, the very first comic he self-published was made possible by a grant from Peter Laird’s Xeric Foundation.

Previously, Williams worked on TMNT cover art and collaborated on crossover projects involving Batman and He-Man. However, this is his inaugural attempt at interior illustrations.

He was thrilled about the Ninja Turtles, especially the original Mirage comics, as they played a significant role in igniting his passion for comic books. Moreover, he finds himself greatly inspired by the strong visual style and textured artwork of early creations from Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird.

A significant portion of the upcoming plotline remains hidden for now, but it commences with the Turtles rejoining forces, filled with optimism about the city’s future. However, as expected, this optimism doesn’t persist long, as a sinister and deeply personal threat, the lethal assassin Ujigami, emerges from the shadows.

To celebrate the debut of our new team, IDW is providing a unique blind bag edition for collectors. This special edition showcases variant covers from talented creators like Daniel Warren Johnson, David Nakayama, Clayton Crain, along with others. The primary cover will be designed by Williams, while Dustin Nguyen will draw the variant cover.

The issue will hit Dec. 10, with the pre-order deadline being Oct. 20.
