TelevisaUnivision CEO Wade Davis Exits Role, Daniel Alegre Named New CEO

As a long-time fan of Spanish-language media and entertainment, I couldn’t be more excited about the new chapter unfolding at TelevisaUnivision! The appointment of Daniel Alegre as CEO marks a significant shift for the company, but one that promises to bring fresh perspectives and innovative strategies to the table.

TelevisaUnivision is getting a new CEO.

The large media corporation in Spanish speaks announces that Wade Davis is relinquishing his position as CEO, instead taking on a new role as Vice Chairman of the board. Daniel Alegre, who previously held the positions of President and COO at Activision Blizzard and CEO of Yuga Labs, will assume the role of CEO, starting Thursday, September 19th.

Two years back, Davis played a key role in arranging the merger worth $4.8 billion, resulting in the formation of TelevisaUnivision. However, at the time, it remained unclear as to the reasons behind this abrupt strategic shift. The company, nevertheless, stated that this move was part of their ongoing succession planning strategy within the Board of Directors.

As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that our beloved company has been pouring considerable resources into both streaming and traditional television platforms. Our innovative Vix streaming service is almost ready to turn a profit, as confirmed by the executives.

In the name of the Board, I am thrilled to announce that Daniel has joined us at TelevisaUnivision. We are embarking on a new chapter in our strategic development, aimed at deeper integration and optimization. Alfonso de Angoitia, executive chairman of TelevisaUnivision, expressed his excitement about this addition. The media landscape has been particularly dynamic, and we are grateful for the remarkable work Wade has done in revitalizing Univision and orchestrating the groundbreaking merger between Univision and Televisa’s content division, resulting in TelevisaUnivision – the world’s foremost Spanish-language media and content company. As we aim to strengthen our unique market position, following recent investments in our linear and streaming platforms, news, and sports offerings, Daniel is perfectly suited to guide us during this crucial time. His extensive experience in technology, digital platforms, and entertainment, spanning over three decades across the U.S., Mexico, and Latin America, will be instrumental in steering TelevisaUnivision towards our next phase of growth.

TelevisaUnivision is perfectly situated to capitalize on emerging opportunities while maintaining a strong bond with the communities we cater to, as the media landscape undergoes significant change,” Alegre stated. “The U.S. and Mexico are the most lucrative and populous Spanish-speaking markets globally, an influential demographic that is growing in significance both locally and internationally. Leveraging TelevisaUnivision’s robust infrastructure, diverse content library, continuous technology advancements, and extensive reach, we are uniquely prepared to keep catering to this crucial audience. Wade and the entire TelevisaUnivision team have established a powerful multi-platform media business offering top-tier quality and variety in entertainment, news, and sports programming. I am excited about collaborating with our international teams and partners to further TelevisaUnivision’s rich legacy and drive the Company to new heights.

2020 saw Searchlight, ForgeLight, Liberty Global joining forces with Grupo Televisa for the acquisition of Univision. The goal was to revitalize and modernize an existing business model. This strategic move laid the foundation for the subsequent merger of their content businesses to birth TelevisaUnivision – a unique entity in today’s global media industry, as stated by Davis. Thanks to our talented team’s dedication, TelevisaUnivision has consistently surpassed market revenue expectations, outpaced both the U.S. and Mexican advertising markets, and expanded its direct-to-consumer service, ViX, into the world’s largest Spanish-language streaming platform. We couldn’t have found a more suitable successor than Daniel, who boasts an impressive history of operational and strategic execution. He is undoubtedly the right executive to guide TelevisaUnivision through its next phase of growth. The company’s future looks promising, and I eagerly anticipate supporting Daniel and the TelevisaUnivision team in my role as Vice Chairman of the Board.
