Over the whole weekend, I played Assassin’s Creed Shadows incessantly without pause, and let me tell you, the fighting in this game is simply the finest the franchise has ever produced – an impressive claim indeed.
In this story, the primary characters, Yasuke and Naoe, possess unique skill sets that never intersect intentionally. If you’re aiming for a quieter strategy with fewer casualties and disruptions, choosing Naoe would be suitable. Conversely, if you’re in the mood for intense hand-to-hand combat, Yasuke is your man for some aggressive fighting and hacking action.
The Parry System Is Better than Ever
In Assassin’s Creed III, the parry system was effective yet fell short of its full capability. The animations were somewhat rigid, but they did make it clear when a block against an adversary’s strike was successful.
In Shadows, the parrying system has been significantly upgraded. It’s now sleeker, more responsive, and provides an exceptionally gratifying experience, complete with the unique sound of clashing swords. Although the game retains its iconic Unblockable Attacks and blue light cues for consecutive parries, these elements seem more dynamic and polished in this version compared to earlier installments.
In Assassin’s Creed series, we haven’t seen a top-notch parrying mechanism until this new installment. Although Mirage aimed to improve it, the game’s brevity didn’t allow for a complete exploration of Basim’s upgraded fighting maneuvers.
Yasuke Is Overpowered—and That’s the Point
Yasuke is deliberately designed as a powerful character, and this strength shows in his abilities. With his lengthy sword and an array of robust weaponry such as the kanabo, he can swiftly defeat ronin and samurai in mere moments.

Whenever I encounter a fortress filled with outlaws or hostile samurai, I invariably choose Yasuke for the swift clean-up. His power to burst through gates and shatter obstacles with his bull rush is immensely gratifying. Each time I command him, I’m confident that I’ll plow through adversaries as if they were mere obstacles in my path.
Without a doubt, it’s evident that Ubisoft dedicated significant time and skill to crafting the smooth animations within this game, particularly during execution scenes, where Yasuke’s beheadings, in an eerie yet fulfilling manner, truly stand out.
Naoe’s Versatility Is Just as Overpowered
In terms of stealth capabilities, Naoe stands head and shoulders above Yasuke. Her equipment is designed for stealth maneuvers, and her Hidden Blade, a classic feature in Assassin’s Creed, makes her extremely deadly. Unlike Yasuke who can swiftly eliminate enemies in no time, Naoe can neutralize elite opponents with just one press of the R1 (Assassinate) button. However, this requires a great deal of caution and patience as Naoe struggles in close-quarters combat, making it risky if not handled carefully.
In the latest Assassin’s Creed games, stealth hasn’t been a prominent feature. However, I’m thrilled to announce that it’s making a grand return! The extensive stealth segments, studying enemy behavior, and reducing kill count has become even more immersive than before.
As a stealthy player, there’s something incredibly thrilling about moving unseen amidst the chaos – it feels like I’ve become a ghostly ninja, eluding detection with each silent step.

In different yet compelling ways, both characters appear excessively powerful. I find myself drawn to Naoe, as her environment appears customized to utilize her agility and mobility. On the other hand, Yasuke serves as a wildcard, excelling in breaching heavily fortified structures or confronting tough boss battles that necessitate brute force.
In recent times, the fight sequences in Assassin’s Creed have been exceptional, and I’m thrilled that Ubisoft gave attention to player suggestions. The vast array of combat choices available to Yasuke and Naoe results in a wide range of playstyles, and the freedom to instantly switch between them (with certain restrictions) creates an engaging and dynamic gameplay experience.
