As a gamer with a deep appreciation for comedy and behind-the-scenes stories, I find Kenan Thompson‘s tales from his time at Saturday Night Live absolutely fascinating. The image of the cast members partying all night and then having to perform the next day brings to mind the challenges and camaraderie that must exist within that unique community.
It’s commonly known that serving on Saturday Night Live (SNL) can be quite demanding on its cast members. At the same time, it appears to be an incredibly enjoyable experience, given the abundance of comedic talent displayed on the stage. Numerous SNL alumni have recounted stories about the heavy workload and how they managed to balance it with bouts of fun – at times, perhaps a little excessively. For instance, Kenan Thompson once shared an anecdote about partying all night with Amy Poehler and Will Forte before they were scheduled to film a sketch. The aftermath of that night reportedly resulted in quite a painful hangover.
Kenan Thompson, SNL’s longest-serving cast member, reminisced about the past on Late Night with Seth Meyers. He shared stories of their enthusiastic partying sessions, specifically recalling an unforgettable night out with Will Forte and Amy Poehler. The trio didn’t call it a night until 4:30 a.m., barely an hour before Thompson was due at the set for filming a sketch. Listen to what Thompson had to share:
I’m greatly amused by Amy Poehler’s reported take that people can be wretched and blue yet still find humor in situations. Regarding Kenan Thompson in that Black Eyed Peas sketch, it’s hard for me to imagine anything more dismal than donning a bulky costume and boogying down in the streets after an exhausting night of drinking and lack of rest. According to Thompson himself:
As a gamer, I can imagine myself as will.i.am, sporting my heavy, scorching dreadlocks back in our Black Eyed Peas days. Remember, it was long before we hit it big. We’d travel all the way upstate New York for our pre-tape sessions. Man, those were grueling times! To pass the hours and add some fun to our routine, I’d invent little skits – like when I’d call my past self, “Shoulda Kenan,” who’d be cozily sleeping at home. He’d get a call from me, “Hey, man!” “What’s up?” “Can you come pick me up?” “Where are you?” “I’m stranded on the side of the highway somewhere.” These little improvisations made our long trips more bearable and kept us entertained.
As a big fan of their hilarious chemistry on set, I can imagine the scene unfolding like this: If misery truly seeks company, then Kenan Thompson and Will Forte had an ample dose of it that fateful day. Though the cameras didn’t capture the moment, Forte’s telltale signs of a hangover were impossible to conceal. Thompson sympathetically noted, “Man, I could really see you weren’t feeling well there, Will. Let me get you some water or perhaps a hair of the dog?”
Forte lay prone on the bare carpet, mimicking an office setting where we used to change clothes. Devoid of any furniture, he attempted to rest and recover from his hangover by remaining motionless.
There seemed to be some regretful events that transpired that morning, yet an intriguing tale emerged from it. Kenan Thompson boasts a rich collection of anecdotes from his time at Saturday Night Live, with the most cherished one being about Maya Rudolph’s afterparty.
The 50-year-old sketch comedy show is getting ready to mark its anniversary, and Kenan Thompson has been part of it for an impressive 22 seasons. This longevity leaves Andy Samberg baffled, not only because Thompson has managed to remain a staple at Saturday Night Live for such an extended period, but also due to his continued success and ability to hold it together during Ryan Gosling’s viral Beavis and Butt-Head sketch from the latest season. Thompson’s expertise is truly remarkable as he didn’t even crack under the pressure.
Currently, Kenan Thompson may prefer listening to Shoulda Kenan over going out for late-night drinking sessions. Regardless of whether it’s his regular self or Crazy Kenan who makes an appearance, we’re looking forward to watching him on Saturday Night Live when the show comes back to our screens this fall as part of the 2024 TV lineup. In the interim, you can catch up on past seasons by subscribing to Peacock, a top-tier streaming platform.
