That Time Will Forte Gave A Wildly Inappropriate Speech At Seth Meyers’ Wedding, And The Bride’s Family Was ‘Not Amused’

Eleven years have passed since Seth Meyers wed Alexi Ashe, and one of the highlights from their grand ceremony that still resonates is a speech delivered by Comedian Will Forte during the rehearsal dinner. In character as Hamilton Whiteman, an obscure SNL personality resembling a neo-Nazi, he delivered a six-minute toast that left some audience members amused while others were less enthused.

It was particularly well-received by Ted Danson and Bill Hader, who couldn’t help but laugh as they shared memories about the speech on Danson’s podcast titled “Where Everybody Knows Your Name.” Danson mentioned that the bride’s family didn’t find it amusing, while Hader admitted he was laughing so hard his laughter could be heard in the background of the wedding video, clearly losing control. Here’s an excerpt from Hader’s thoughts…

As a film enthusiast, I must say, there’s a man who reminds me eerily of Paul Williams, the singer, though his political views are starkly different – extremely conservative, bordering on radical right-wing ideologies, almost neo-Nazi in essence. In various skits, he was always delivering speeches, and at Seth’s wedding, he took it upon himself to give a wedding speech. The bride’s family wasn’t thrilled about this unexpected turn of events. Instead of expressing his admiration tastefully, he went on to describe the bride as ‘I met Alexi with her stunning face, athletic legs, and flawless bosom.’ The reaction was immediate and palpable – ‘Jesus,’ we all murmured in disbelief, shaking our heads. You can hear my laughter on the recording, I was dying because this guy just didn’t care, but you could feel everyone else saying ‘Oh my god.’ He concluded his speech with a bold prediction: ‘I will be there when Alexi gives birth to what will undoubtedly be a homosexual baby, and I’ll be in the corner brimming with I told you so.’ It was quite the wedding that took place on Martha’s Vineyard. His audacious speech left me both terrified and impressed – it was just ballsy.

Recently, a video featuring Danson and Hader discussing the speech has gone viral on social media platforms. However, this isn’t the first time the speech has been brought up in public discussions. Previously, Forte appeared on Late Night With Seth Meyers, where they delved into the topic, even screening a brief clip from the speech. Meyers stated that this was the only thirty seconds deemed suitable to broadcast on network television.

Luckily, Meyers found the entire situation quite entertaining, given that it’s likely anticipation for oddity when inviting Will Forte to a wedding. You can see a video clip of their conversation on the topic, along with a brief snippet from the wedding itself, available below.

The podcast discussion centered around Danson and Hader’s initial broader chat about Forte, particularly his desire to engage in work he enjoyed rather than prioritizing audience approval. Hader pointed out that it was inspiring to observe someone who wasn’t preoccupied with results but instead focused on the process and the message they were trying to convey.

The content that Forte creates, with his unique personal life stories and unconventional themes, rarely resonates with a mass audience. This is similar to the case of “MacGruber,” which was never expected to appeal widely (possibly why Pepsi had reservations about partnership). The humor in MacGruber, as well as much of Forte’s work on SNL like characters such as Jeff Montgomery, a man in a sex offender costume on Halloween who may or may not be a sex offender, and Tim Calhoun, a political candidate with an awkward voice and over-the-top political mannerisms, is highly specific and creatively bold. It’s not designed to appeal to everyone.

Lucky for Forte, many fans understand and admire his style of comedy, and he shares a similar sense of humor with several other comedians, including his former SNL colleague Andy Samberg. Following Forte’s memorable speech at the wedding, Samberg approached him and asked if he would deliver a character toast at his own nuptials. Here’s hoping we learn more about that eventuality in the future.
