‘That’s The Cajun Right There’: X-Men 97’s Director Breaks Down The Gambit Scene That Went Through Multiple Revisions Before They Got It Perfect

As a gamer with decades of comic book and animated series experiences under my belt, I must say that this year has truly been the reign of Gambit! From his captivating performance in X-Men ’97 to his electrifying appearance in Deadpool and Wolverine, it’s safe to say that Remy LeBeau is on fire (pun intended).

2021 can be seen as the year that found Gambit, the card-tossing mutant, taking center stage. He played a crucial role in animating the TV series “X-Men ’97”, which is now accessible on Disney+. Moreover, fans were pleasantly surprised when Gambit made an appearance in live action during a key scene in “Deadpool and Wolverine”. This moment was something that actor Channing Tatum had longed for over the course of at least ten years. It seems Gambit’s popularity has never been higher, as he appears to be everywhere these days.

A significant portion of Gambit’s successful portrayal in X-Men 97 can be attributed to how the creators handled the Cajun mutant. Gambit is a complex character, who often shines on paper but may not always translate well to screen when it comes to demonstrating his unique abilities. This was evident in Taylor Kitsch’s attempt to play the mutant in X-Men: Origins – Wolverine.

In a remarkable fashion, X-Men 97 truly captured the essence of Gambit’s character. The creative team masterfully portrayed his mischievous and chivalrous side, as well as his humorous and heroic traits. This culminated in episode 5, titled “Remember It,” where Gambit made a selfless sacrifice that left the voice actors deeply moved. During my conversation with X-Men 97 director Emi/Emmett Yonemura, who oversaw that episode, I enquired about the number of attempts it took to nail the line delivery that gave the episode its title, as the confident delivery truly embodied Gambit’s character. Yonemura attributed this to voice talent A.J. LoCascio, who shared their thoughts with TopMob.

As a dedicated fan, I can share that crafting the final scene, particularly the climactic moment, involved several iterations. We revisited it numerous times to capture the perfect instant. The instructions were often intense, “Remember this!” bellowed as if he meant it. But in the end, we realized Remy LeBeau, aka Gambit, is too cool for anything else. He’s always going to maintain his charm and grace, even when facing his most dire circumstances. That enigmatic smirk followed by “Remember it” just felt like Gambit at his best – the embodiment of the Cajun character that we all adore. And in that moment, everyone in the room agreed wholeheartedly, “That’s Gambit alright!”

One particularly fulfilling scene from the first season of X-Men ’97 is bittersweet. As we eagerly await Season 2, we anticipate that it will bring more such emotional moments. Interestingly, the final episodes of Season 1 hinted at some intriguing time-travel elements for Season 2. If you’re curious, we’ve ranked all episodes of X-Men ’97, so do check out where “Remember It” is placed. Moreover, if you’d like to see more of Gambit, get involved in the campaign for upcoming stories featuring Channing Tatum as the lead character. This could potentially lead to his appearance in an Avengers film or a large-scale crossover event like Avengers: Secret Wars.
