The Acolyte Season 1 Finale: Who Was That Sith Lord In The Cave?

As a longtime “Star Wars” fan with a deep appreciation for the rich history and lore of the galaxy far, far away, I was absolutely thrilled to finally get a glimpse of Darth Plagueis in the season finale of “The Acolyte.” His brief appearance, shrouded in mystery as he peered out from a cave, was a moment that sent chills down my spine.

“Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise?”

The famous line from “Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith” isn’t just entertaining to repeat; it also alludes to complex manipulations behind the dark side of the Force and the Sith’s acquisition of unusual powers. It seems that the finale of “The Acolyte” has at last unveiled a glimpse of one of the most powerful Sith figures in “Star Wars” history – Darth Plagueis. Although his identity wasn’t explicitly mentioned, it’s highly probable it was him we saw lurking in a cave for a fleeting second in Episode 8, also called “The Acolyte.” Based on the information available about “Star Wars” lore and the series’ timeline, it’s a reasonable assumption.

In “Revenge of the Sith,” as commonly understood, Emperor Palpatine, portrayed by Ian McDiarmid, spoke of Plagueis’ intense preoccupation with defying death through the power of the Force. He used this force not only to generate new life but also to shield those dear to him from dying. However, Plagueis met his end at the hands of his apprentice, who was later revealed to be Palpatine himself, perpetuating his quest for immortality and reappearing in “The Rise of Skywalker.”

With approximately a century separating the timeline of “The Acolyte” and “The Phantom Menace,” it is safe to assume that Plagueis is still alive during the former. However, since Plagueis spends his final moments in a cave at the end of “The Acolyte’s” season finale, it remains unclear what connection he has with Qimir (Manny Jacinto). It’s an intriguing possibility that Qimir could be Plagueis’ disciple, assuming the role of Darth Tenebrous.

The potential significance of having Darth Plagueis in The Acolyte

The Acolyte Season 1 Finale: Who Was That Sith Lord In The Cave?

“The Acolyte” finale leaves us pondering several unanswered queries, increasing our anticipation for a potential Season 2, even without an official announcement. The intriguing possibility of uncovering Darth Plagueis’ identity makes delving deeper into this era of “Star Wars” essential. As Yoda wisely stated, “A master and apprentice, there are.” With Osha (Amandla Stenberg) joining the dark side, it seems we now have an additional player, potentially influenced by Plagueis beforehand. Mae’s (also Stenberg) story could be intertwined as well.

Plagueis had the ability to manipulate midi-chlorians to bring life into existence, as shown in “The Acolyte” with Osha and Mae being created as one soul’s two parts. Given Plagueis’ obsession with life and death, it’s plausible that he was involved in the creation of Anakin Skywalker through similar means, making Palpatine/Darth Sidious his other potential father figure. Osha and Mae might have been an early attempt that didn’t turn out as perfectly as Plagueis intended.

As Plagueis looms in the shadows, what implications could this have for the dark side threesome? If Qimir indeed equals Darth Tenebrous, a character from “Star Wars Legends” though no longer canon, Plagueis might soon eliminate his master. Alternatively, Qimir may be someone else entirely, perhaps Plagueis’ upcoming apprentice, who would replace Osha if he favors her presence instead. These scenarios add excitement to the potential storyline for “The Acolyte” Season 2, and we can only hope that live-action Plagueis continues to make an appearance.
