The Acolyte Star Posts Honest Reaction To The Show’s Cancellation, But Leaves The Door Open To ‘Changes In The Future’

As a passionate Star Wars fan who has spent countless hours immersed in the galaxy far, far away, I am genuinely disheartened by the news of The Acolyte‘s cancellation. Like many others, I was eagerly anticipating the unfolding of the intricate plotlines and character arcs that Leslye Headland masterfully crafted.

Warning: SPOILERS for The Acolyte are ahead!

Approximately two months ago, “The Acolyte” made its debut on Disney+, and a month later, its first season concluded. Since then, it was announced that this popular “Star Wars” TV series has been cancelled, causing a wave of disheartened fans and regrettable trolling. Despite the disappointment of not seeing another season, many remain hopeful that the storyline may be revisited in the future. Lee Jung-jae, who played Master Sol, was among those taken aback by the news but remains optimistic about potential future explorations within this corner of the “Star Wars” universe.

Given that Sol met his end at the hands of Amandla Stenberg’s character, Osha, in the last episode of The Acolyte‘s Season 1, it is clear that Lee wouldn’t have been part of Season 2. However, he was eager to see how the remaining characters’ stories would unfold, expressing his anticipation to Entertainment Weekly.

To put it simply, I genuinely admired Leslye’s writing skills. I found her to be an exceptional storyteller, character creator, and architect of compelling narrative structures. Therefore, I was quite eager for a potential Season 2 with her in charge. The recent news left me surprised, but optimistically, I am hoping for possible changes in the future. On a personal note, I truly hope we get to experience more of Leslye’s storytelling in a second season.

In the previous season, The Acolyte set some crucial foundations, such as Osha deciding to learn the Dark Side from Qimir, Mae undergoing memory wipe and being looked after by Vernestra Rwoh, Darth Plagueis making his debut on screen, and Vernestra visiting Yoda, presumably to inform him about the real tale behind Sol, Osha, and Qimiri, with Qimiri being Vernestra’s ex-apprentice. It seems like a lot of storylines were left unresolved, and I was as taken aback as Lee Jung-jae when it was revealed that these threads won’t be revisited in Season 2. Although Disney hasn’t explicitly stated why The Acolyte was cancelled, it was rumored to be due to low viewership ratings.

Amongst Disney’s Star Wars television series, “Star Wars: Andor” Season 2 is currently the only one with a confirmed continuation beyond its initial season, unlike shows such as “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” “The Book of Boba Fett,” and “The Mandalorian” which were planned as single seasons or have uncertain futures due to upcoming projects like “Skeleton Crew” and “The Mandalorian & Grogu.” The status of “Skeleton Crew” remains undecided, with potential for multiple seasons like “The Mandalorian,” while the fate of “Ahsoka” has already been greenlit for a second season.

Just as Lee Jung-jae suggested, it’s possible that the stories connected to ‘The Acolyte’ could unfold somewhere down the line. Its TV run may be over, but there’s a chance Lucasfilm might agree to wrap up those previously mentioned storylines in a book or even a series of books, or perhaps as an ongoing comic book series. If this comes to pass, we’ll keep you updated.
