As a long-time connoisseur of streetwear and sneaker culture, I must admit that the latest “Lace” version of the adidas Samba has truly captured my attention. Having grown up watching the Samba’s evolution over the years, it’s fascinating to see how this iconic football shoe continues to reinvent itself, dipping into new realms such as ballet-inspired aesthetics, a departure from its traditional sports roots.
As a devoted Adidas fan, I’m thrilled about their latest unveiling of the Samba in a fresh “Lace” design, drawing inspiration from the world of ballet. Over the last few years, the Samba has made a comeback in our wardrobes with an array of innovative adaptations and collaborative efforts, such as Pharrell’s Humanrace line and the three-way 8th Street Samba collaboration with Ronnie Fieg and Clarks Originals. However, this time around, it seems Adidas is diving into the trend known as “balletcore.” Although the “Lace” isn’t a collaborative release, it appears to resonate with the aesthetics of today’s influential designers, hinting at the sophisticated athleticism of Wales Bonner and the whimsical bows of Sandy Liang.
The “Lace” model emphasizes refreshing the materials instead of drastically altering the Samba’s sleek shape. At a distance, the changes to this football icon may not be immediately noticeable, particularly in the signature white-and-black color scheme displayed in the preview pictures. Instead of using traditional white leather uppers, a mesh that resembles lace is used throughout the shoe. White trim at the eyestays and heel area subtly references tutus worn in Ballet performances. Lastly, the tongue features enlarged laces with scalloped details and flower-shaped leather embellishments.
Moving forward, Adidas is not only maintaining the popularity of Samba but also promoting other traditional models such as SL72 and Handball Spezial, which are part of its 75th-anniversary collection. Although faced with a few contentious issues, like the Bella Hadid campaign that met with strong criticism, Adidas’s approach of emphasizing its heritage has been effective, resulting in a 12% increase in revenue during its second fiscal quarter.
Adidas hasn’t disclosed a specific launch date for the “Samba ‘Lace'” yet, however, it is planned to be released by the end of the year 2024.
