The Animation Guild and Studios Schedule New Dates in Pivotal Negotiations

As a veteran gamer and animator with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen the industry evolve from hand-drawn cells to digital masterpieces. The latest news about the Animation Guild’s negotiations with studios and streamers has piqued my interest.

The lead negotiator from The Animation Guild expresses optimism, stating they believe it’s possible to strike a deal with film studios and streaming platforms during crucial talks. These discussions are essential as they will shape how significant studios approach AI integration within their animation processes.

The labor agreement between the animation workers’ union and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers has been extended until December 2nd, as both sides work towards a fresh deal. Following their most recent discussions on Monday and Tuesday, they will reconvene for further negotiations starting November 18th.

Steve Kaplan, a union business representative and lead negotiator, mentioned that his team had been working tirelessly over the past few days to ensure the studios and streamers paid attention to their key proposals. He expressed optimism that the studios might be ready to make the necessary adjustments to reach an agreement, and he eagerly anticipated another meeting in November. It was confirmed on Wednesday that the contract has been extended.

This week, discussions centered on several key priorities set by the union, such as regulating AI usage, ensuring adequate staffing levels, and maintaining job stability.

Ever since August 12, this back-and-forth dialogue between the union and the AMPTP has been a rollercoaster ride, with pauses here and there. In the heat of mid-August, we managed to schedule more talks for September, only to find ourselves at an impasse, as the union pointed out “significant differences” in our positions. Consequently, we’ve added more negotiations dates in October and extended the contract until November 1, a move that postpones the original expiration date of July 31.

More to come.
