A day prior to its North American debut, “The Apprentice” made a strong entrance on Rotten Tomatoes, garnering an impressive score, in spite of the ongoing controversy surrounding the Donald Trump biopic. The film boasts Sebastian Stan as Trump, Jeremy Strong portraying his mentor Roy Cohn, Maria Bakalova stepping into the role of Ivana Trump, and Martin Donovan playing Fred Trump, the family patriarch. The Briarcliff production has been a contentious topic since its announcement in 2018, however, tensions have significantly escalated lately due to its strategic release timing, just before the 2024 Presidential election.
Checking Rotten Tomatoes, we find that The Apprentice initially earned a Fresh certification rating of 80% from 100 reviewers. As for the audience score, it remains undisclosed at this moment. With its explosive theme, it’s intriguing to see how it fares with viewers once the movie has had a few days to settle in and make an impact over the weekend.
Instead of seeking a critical piece that belittles Trump’s presidency persona from 2016, it would be more fruitful to look elsewhere for material depicting him as a self-centered clown (maybe his Truth Social account?). The upcoming show, The Apprentice, however, will highlight the formative years of this controversial figure, zeroing in on the 70s and 80s when he climbed to become one of New York’s toughest real estate tycoons.
