The Apprentice's Sebastian Stan Thinks There's a Little Trump in All of Us

As a child of immigrants myself, I found Sebastian Stan‘s performance in “The Apprentice” to be nothing short of riveting. The actor’s ability to delve into the complexities of a character like Donald Trump, and more importantly, highlight the shared experiences between an immigrant and a political figure, is commendable.

Actor Sebastian Stan has dared to step into the contentious role of portraying former U.S. President Donald Trump, before his term, in the upcoming film “The Apprentice”. It came as quite a surprise for many when the charming character from the Avengers series, Bucky Barnes, was seen playing someone who is generally disliked by the public. Even Trump himself attempted to prevent the movie’s release, but it will hit the screens on October 11, 2024. Despite the public’s mixed reactions, Stan remains resolute in his choice to portray this divisive character and aims to reveal some human aspects of the well-known political figure.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Marvel actor explained that viewers might gain insights about the ruthless businessman and their own nature through the movie. Stan shared with EW his belief that Trump’s questionable traits are not unique but rather part of human nature. He emphasized the contrasting opinions people have towards the business magnate and how The Apprentice strives to depict a balanced portrayal.

There’s a wide spectrum of opinion about him; some view him as divine while others see him as devilish. Perhaps it would be beneficial to remind everyone that he is merely human, in order to foster a more balanced perspective.

In essence, the man is just an ordinary human being, and Stan aims to demonstrate that the aspects we dislike or fear about Trump are actually common traits within us all. In an interview with EW, Stan expressed that while embodying the character, he recognized some parallels between his own experiences as a Romanian immigrant and those of the American-born politician. Specifically, Stan identified with the belief in the American Dream and the drive to excel at any cost, which mirrors Trump’s relentless pursuit of wealth and success. Through his portrayal of the former president, Stan hopes to help viewers recognize these shared traits within themselves.

It might be beneficial for us to examine the less desirable aspects that reside within each person, as this can help us learn how to interact positively with them instead of ignoring or suppressing them. I believe the key lies in understanding and managing these aspects effectively because no one is morally superior…We should strive for a more balanced, healthier connection with our inner demons.

Why Director Ali Abbasi Is Focused On ‘The Other’

Ali Abbasi, director of “The Apprentice”, echoes a similar viewpoint as lead actor Sebastian Stan. In an interview with Broadsheet, Abbasi stated that as a Danish-Iranian horror director, he has a deep fascination for “the other” – individuals who are not part of his personal sphere. Abbasi emphasized that to genuinely delve into understanding those dissimilar to us, such as the serial killers in his previous films, it’s crucial to acknowledge and confront the commonalities we all possess.

When asked about the title of the movie, “An American Horror Story,” Abbasi explained that it’s a horror story portraying the descent of humanity amidst a survival-of-the-fittest capitalist society. He also discussed the challenging journey in getting the film released.

The story is chilling in the sense that it mirrors the grim reality of human existence: the squandered possibilities within us. It’s undeniably tragic as well. Just like in the movie, this character was a dynamic young individual with ambition. I wouldn’t call him endearing, but I don’t believe he was a psychopath either. The narrative then delves into a survival-of-the-fittest scenario where one must either kill or be killed, which is how the situation is portrayed.
