The sequel to the 2022 hit animated film, “The Bad Guys”, based on Aaron Blabey’s popular graphic book series, seems to fall into the common Hollywood trap of needing to be larger and more extravagant than its predecessor. This is evident from the start with a complex heist and high-speed chase through the streets of Cairo that could leave Tom Cruise in awe. “The Bad Guys 2” aims to surpass the original at every opportunity, which might seem excessive, but thankfully, the film, skillfully directed by Pierre Perifel, maintains the same cleverness and charm that captivated both children and adults in the first movie.
The movie opens with a gang of animal outlaws, reminiscent of the “Reservoir Dogs”, led by Mr. Wolf (Sam Rockwell), joined by Mr. Snake (Marc Maron) who specializes in safecracking, the comically inappropriate disguise expert Mr. Shark (Craig Robinson), hot-tempered Mr. Piranha (Anthony Ramos), and Ms. Tarantula (Awkwafina) who handles their digital operations. After serving time, they aim to live legitimately; however, their shady past makes it challenging. An amusing scene showcases Mr. Wolf applying for a job at a bank he’s previously robbed numerous times, but, as you might expect, he is not hired.
As a gamer, it’s no shock that I find myself drawn back into another daring adventure. This time, I’m teamed up with the tough Bad Girls crew: snow leopard Kitty Kat (Danielle Brooks), my ruthless squad leader; wild boar Pigtail (Maria Bakalova), our science genius; and raven Doom (Natasha Lyonne, fresh off her brilliant voice role in Smurfs). I’ve got a history with Doom, and it looks like we’ll be deepening that connection. We even get to see a funny scene of me, well, Mr. Snake, unhinging my jaw during a make-out session with her.
The storyline, where a rocket ship is stolen from a tech tycoon named Colin Jost who bears a striking resemblance to a famous chainsaw-wielding character, seems absurd enough for the movie to incorporate MacGuffinite as a central theme. It indeed has a James Bond feel, ranging from its Moonraker-esque journey into space to its villainous plan to seize all the world’s gold reserves.
Throughout the journey, there are plenty of vibrant and entertaining incidents, such as a scene with a Mexican wrestling match and the reappearance of several characters from the initial movie. One notable moment features Governor Foxington (played by Zazie Beetz), Wolf’s love interest, seeking advice from the villainous Professor Marmalade (Richard Ayoade) in prison. Now significantly muscled up, the imposing guinea pig gives her a reception reminiscent of Hannibal Lecter, a rodent.
The movie is filled with an abundance of Mr. Piranha’s flatulent humor, but since it’s an animated film and kids usually find such jokes amusing, it can be easily overlooked. However, the script by Yoni Brenner and Etan Cohen is typically more intelligent, brimming with clever one-liners that focus on character development rather than pop culture references. The fact that this wit is skillfully delivered by a talented cast of voice actors, who appear to have been chosen for their vocal skills rather than their fame (even though there’s no lack of it), makes it even more enjoyable.
Without a doubt, they’re all exceptional, yet it’s Rockwell who truly shines – both then and now. His characterization is infused with the same style and accuracy that we see in his real-life roles.
Showcasing a similar energetic flair as its predecessor, “The Bad Guys 2” delivers even bigger chuckles through its unexpected cuts that feel like electrifying, animated exclamation points. Daniel Pemberton’s vibrant musical accompaniment further amplifies the fun and frolic.
