As a fan of Nicholas Hoult‘s versatile acting skills and his captivating performances in films like The Menu and Renfield, it’s heartwarming to see him join the DCU as Lex Luthor, a role that will undoubtedly showcase his talent once more. While losing out on playing Batman might have been a tough pill to swallow, Hoult has proven time and again that he’s resilient and adaptable.
A well-recognized actor like Nicholas Hoult, famous for movies such as “The Menu” and “Renfield”, was among the front runners to embody The Dark Knight in Matt Reeves’ modern take on the DC superhero, “The Batman”. Although not getting the coveted comic book film role that ultimately went to Robert Pattinson may have been something Hoult could accept, learning he would never likely put on the cape and cowl was quite a tough blow.
During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Hoult shared that his aspirations were shattered upon learning that Pattinson was favored for the latest role of Bruce Wayne. This information came to him through a radio broadcast prior to his own audition process.
A week before our Batman test, I was driving with the radio playing and they mentioned that Rob might become the new Batman. I thought to myself, “That’s not official yet! I have an audition coming up next weekend. Let me get a fair shot as well.
I was fortunate enough to have an opportunity to audition for the role, and let me tell you, it was quite an ordeal, both mentally and emotionally challenging. If given the chance, I would have jumped at the prospect of being a part of Keanu Reeves’ film.
Absolutely, it’s definitely a tough pill to swallow. On one hand, you understand logically that you’re competing against Rob for the role, and he’s excellent in the film they’ve chosen. It was the right choice. However, the anticipation gets the best of you. Matt Reeves is an outstanding director, and the script and overall project were enticing – I found myself thinking ‘this could be a fantastic movie I want to be involved with.’
The character is exceptionally well-crafted. Before reaching the point of acceptance and realizing that it was indeed the best decision, one often experiences a strange phase where questions like ‘What if I had done something else?’ or ‘Why wasn’t it me?’ arise. These thoughts lead to contemplating different scenarios.
Nicholas Hoult Will Join the DCU as the Supervillain Lex Luthor
Though Nicholas Hoult came close to portraying one of DC’s most revered heroes, he will instead step into the role of a DCU villain, Lex Luthor. In James Gunn’s forthcoming Superman reboot, Hoult will breathe life into this iconic antagonist, marking his return to the superhero realm after X-Men: First Class. The actor recently commented on the unusual auditioning procedures nowadays.
It’s strange now because this process, which was previously private, has suddenly become public knowledge. Often, people go through auditions without any news of it ever being shared. It’s normal to experience setbacks, but it feels different when those failures are exposed to what seems like everyone.
In the same year as “The Batman,” which earned $772.3 million at the box office, three Academy Award nominations, and was one of the highest-grossing films of the year, Robert Pattinson secured the lead role. However, Tom Hoults’ performance in the gastronomy thriller “The Menu” that same year was also remarkable. Moreover, he has several upcoming projects like “Nosferatu,” Clint Eastwood’s “Juror No. 2,” and “Superman.” Consequently, it is improbable that Hoults would feel disappointed with his career trajectory.
