The Batman Spinoff Featuring Catwoman Not Happening, Confirms HBO

As a long-time aficionado of the dark and gritty world of Gotham City, I find myself both disappointed and intrigued by HBO’s decision to shelve the Zoë Kravitz-led Catwoman spinoff. The tantalizing tease of Selina Kyle’s departure for Blüdhaven in ‘The Batman‘ had me purring with anticipation for more feline adventures. Yet, it seems that the cat may not be making a swift return to our screens anytime soon.

Despite persistent speculation over the years that a Catwoman spinoff starring Zoë Kravitz was in development, HBO has recently put an end to plans for such a series. Following the explosive finale of The Penguin, many anticipated that the next show set within Matt Reeves’ universe would center around Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman. However, it appears that HBO is not interested in producing a television series focusing on her storyline post-The Batman.

According to a conversation with TV Line, HBO Chairman Casey Bloys flatly stated “No” when asked about the prospect of a Catwoman spinoff on their channel. Contrary to some reports, Bloys clarified that there is no Catwoman project underway. Instead, discussions between Reeves and The Penguin showrunner Lauren LeFranc revolve around Season 2 and other ideas for the network. While it appears the Batman universe will persist on HBO, it looks like Selina Kyle won’t be part of it moving forward.

It seems we’ve primarily discussed the possibility of another tale featuring “The Penguin,” but for now, Reeves must prioritize completing ‘Batman II.’ I need to give him time to establish and launch that project. However, given their successful collaboration, Matt and ‘Penguin’ showrunner Lauren LeFranc may come up with an engaging idea in the future.

Previously, Catwoman was last spotted at the end of “The Batman,” hinting she’d relocate to Blüdhaven and invited Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne to join her. Leaving on her own accord, it seemed she was dangling a carrot for viewers, suggesting her future appearances in the familiar DC Comics setting (Nightwing, aka Dick Grayson, is originally from Blüdhaven). Since no TV spinoff is planned at HBO Max, it’s plausible she might make a guest appearance in “The Penguin” Season 2 or another project. It remains to be seen if Kravitz will reprise her role in “The Batman Part II,” or possibly spearhead her own standalone film, but fans can anticipate seeing the character resurface in some capacity, perhaps sooner rather than later.

‘The Penguin’ Teases Catwoman, But Why?

The ending of “The Penguin” was heart-wrenching for multiple reasons, leaving viewers in shock over a painful death. Yet, it also hints at what’s to come, serving as a direct prelude to “The Batman Part II“. One of these hints is the scene where Sofia Falcone (played by Cristin Milioti) gets a letter from her sister Selina Kyle while she’s in Arkham Asylum. It’s uncertain if this plot point will be explored soon, as a potential second season of “The Penguin” might not air until after the 2026 release of “The Batman“. However, nothing is ever left unintentional in Reeves’ grand crime narrative.

It appears that, as of now, Catwoman might not be a part of The Batman Part II, given its timeline places it just weeks after The Penguin, and Selina Kyle’s return from her break could be too soon to expect. However, she wouldn’t be an unwelcome addition if she were to appear. Matt Reeves mentioned back in 2022 that the character was under consideration for HBO, before The Penguin was even filmed. Since then, it seems only Colin Farrell’s series has received official approval, while others like the Arkham spinoff continue to develop uncertainly.
