'The Batman' Star Confirms Role in Scrapped 'Gotham PD' Series

As a movie reviewer with a penchant for gritty, grounded storytelling and a soft spot for the Caped Crusader, I must say that Jeffrey Wright’s insight into the aborted Gotham PD series leaves me both intrigued and disappointed in equal measure. The idea of delving deeper into Matt Reeves’ dark, grimy version of Gotham City, with its cinematic homages to the 70s, is tantalizingly alluring.

Jeffrey Wright, who portrayed Commissioner Jim Gordon in Matt Reeves’ film ‘The Batman‘, recently shared some details about the abandoned television series ‘Gotham PD’, which was initially planned for HBO. This series, set within the universe of ‘The Batman’, would have focused on a third-generation Gotham police officer who comes to terms with his allegiance to the wrong side of the law. The project’s creative lead was expected to be Terence Winter, known for his work as showrunner on ‘Boardwalk Empire’ and executive producer on ‘The Sopranos’. However, the series was ultimately cancelled in 2022. In an interview with The Playlist’s “Bingeworthy” podcast, Wright revealed that he had been in preliminary discussions to bring his version of Gordon into ‘Gotham PD’.

Absolutely, there was a potential scenario. However, events unfolded in secret, and surprisingly, Gordon didn’t play a major role in it. This aspect intrigued me as well. He was only meant to make brief appearances within the context.

In an earlier disclosure, it was mentioned that the show would share similarities with “The Penguin” series, as Batman wouldn’t be physically present, but his influence would be noticeable. As Winters stated to The Playlist in September, “The Batman existed within that universe, but you never actually saw him.” Regrettably, we can only speculate about the extent of Gordon or Batman’s involvement in the series.

Jeffrey Wright “Can’t Wait to Get to Gotham” Again in ‘The Batman Part II’

Wright also spoke about the upcoming sequel to The Batman, stating that he’s excited to get back into Reeves’s universe and “can’t wait to get to Gotham.”

Matt has been busy with his projects, and so have I, but our paths haven’t crossed lately… However, that will change in the coming months. I’m really looking forward to it! I admire his take on Gotham city; it’s gritty, realistic, and evokes a cinematic realism reminiscent of ’70s films like Taxi Driver. The way he portrays Batman within this setting is truly captivating, and I can hardly wait to return to Gotham myself.

So, what can fans of the Bat looking forward to in Reeves’ second installment? At this moment, specific details are still hidden, but Reeves did share with Entertainment Weekly that the script, which he co-wrote with Peter Craig and Mattson Tomlin, is now finished. He also mentioned that events from The Penguin will significantly impact the sequel’s plot, suggesting Colin Farrell may reprise his role as Oz Cobblepot, though it’s yet to be determined if he’ll serve as the main antagonist or play a secondary character, much like in The Batman. It’s uncertain at this point whether Paul Dano’s Riddler, Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman, and Barry Keoghan’s Joker will make an appearance. The Batman Part II is currently slated for release in October 2026.
