The Batman’s Jeffrey Wright Revealed The Villain He’d Love To See Join The Franchise, And I’m All About This Wild Choice

As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with over two decades of immersion in these worlds, I can’t help but feel a tinge of excitement at Jeffrey Wright‘s suggestion for the villain he’d like to see in the next Batman movie – James Gordon Jr.

The sequel to “The Batman: Part II” won’t begin filming until the 2025 movie calendar reaches spring, but we’re eagerly anticipating Robert Pattinson reprising his role as Matt Reeves’ Dark Knight that we’ve already brainstormed potential villains for the next “Batman” movie, aside from possibly bringing back Paul Dano’s Riddler. (Considering Pattinson’s own hint about a villain in the sequel.) Now, co-star Jeffrey Wright has shared his preferred choice, and it’s an unsettlingly intriguing selection.

In a recent development, Jeffrey Wright has stepped into the role of James Gordon, a well-known character from the comic books, in “The Batman.” When asked about the villain he’d like to see in “The Batman: Part II” or future projects during an interview about his new series “The Agency,” Wright surprisingly didn’t shy away from the question. Instead, he offered a response that seems particularly relevant.

There’s quite a selection available. You may want to consider that Gordon’s son develops some questionable behavior. It could potentially happen.

It’s quite intriguing! Actor Jeffrey Wright, who hasn’t yet played a Commissioner character, has hinted at the possibility of introducing James Gordon Jr. into the storyline. While it’s uncertain if this will happen in the near future, as there seems to be little focus on Gordon’s family life, it’s worth contemplating that he’d even consider introducing his son.

Readers who follow comic books might recognize James Gordon Jr.’s descent into villainy in various storylines. He made his initial appearance during Frank Miller and Dave Mazzucchelli’s “Batman: Year One” saga, but later became the target of Gordon’s disgruntled former partner’s kidnapping, though he was eventually rescued unharmed. However, over time, his questionable actions surfaced, such as performing animal sacrifices, and at one point, he was under suspicion following the disappearance of his sister’s friend.

In the later stages of his life, James Jr. developed multiple personality disorder, manifesting as a psychotic killer. Frequently endangering his sister, he eventually aligns himself with Amanda Waller’s infamous Suicide Squad in one aspect of the narrative.

It’s not entirely clear how Matt Reeves’ Batman franchise will incorporate so many significant new members into Commissioner Gordon’s on-screen family. However, given that Jeffrey Wright is the first Black actor to portray this character in live action, I’m particularly curious about who the producers might choose to play Barbara and James Jr. in the series.

When queried about his preferred actor for the role of James Jr., Wright implies that he has a clear vision for this eccentric choice, thereby adding a touch of plausibility to an otherwise extraordinary suggestion. In his own words, when asked whom he envisions playing James Jr., he replied:

Ohhh, I have some ideas. Or maybe one idea.

Upon hearing that answer, I shifted my perspective from believing “It’s highly unlikely James Gordon Jr. will be a villain in future Batman films” to questioning “How long must I endure the anticipation of discovering who Jeffrey Wright desires to portray his on-screen son?” Despite remaining doubtful about it actually happening, I must admit that the unexpected news has left me somewhat speechless and struggling to fully process it.

I’m crossing my fingers that we receive an official sneak peek or announcement about The Batman: Part II well ahead of its release on October 2, 2026.
