As someone who has spent countless hours watching Adam Sandler films, from his early comedies to his more recent roles, I can attest that he is indeed a versatile actor capable of delivering performances beyond what many expect. However, it wasn’t until Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2002 drama “Punch-Drunk Love” that I truly appreciated Sandler’s acting prowess.
Adam Sandler is commonly recognized as an actor who delivered popular dumb comedies from the ’90s, yet he’s been associated with less sophisticated and repetitive humor ever since, such as movies like “Grown Ups” or a series of rom-coms like “Just Go with It” and “50 First Dates”. Many of these (frequently unfunny) films are either produced or written by Sandler himself. Occasionally, he allows other creators to guide his work, which usually leads to more successful outcomes (e.g., “The Meyerowitz Stories”, “Hustle”, and “Spaceman”). The actor garnered an Independent Spirit Award for his performance in “Uncut Gems”, but opinions differ as to whether it’s his best film.
2002’s unique drama “Punch-Drunk Love,” directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, presents a striking departure from Adam Sandler’s usual roles. In this film, Sandler plays Barry Egan, a businessman who is both socially awkward and anxiety-ridden. The plot unfolds as Barry navigates an array of peculiar experiences while developing feelings for Lena (Emily Watson), a coworker of his sister. The movie is adorned with Jeremy Blake’s abstract art visuals, offering an unusual yet captivating aesthetic. Sandler’s performance in this film was exceptional, earning him a Golden Globe nomination. The Criterion Collection’s new 4K release allows fans to enjoy the movie in its sharpest quality to date, featuring plenty of bonus behind-the-scenes content.
A Film with Uniquely Stunning Visuals
Every year, it’s a cherished custom for Criterion’s X page to share a scene from PTA’s birthday movie, and one of my favorites has always been the exchange between Barry and “Mattress King” Dean, brilliantly portrayed by Philip Seymour Hoffman. Although the dialogue is undeniably captivating in this scene (and throughout the film), it’s the intricately planned lighting and character placement against the backdrop that truly showcases the film’s visual artistry. Punch-Drunk Love, with its breathtaking cinematography, is a testament to this craftsmanship, and the new remaster promises to bring even more light to the creativity behind the scenes.
Experiencing the 4K, HDR remaster of this movie is an absolute treat for me as a supporter, offering a chance to immerse myself in Jeremy Blake’s breathtaking surrealist imagery like never before on home media. Paul Thomas Anderson’s decision to replace regular cross-fades with these strange, psychedelic visuals sets the film apart, giving it a distinctive fairy tale-like quality that distinguishes it from other rom-coms and roots it firmly in the director’s unique creative mind. The allure of witnessing this extraordinary artwork in stunning 4K is hard to resist.
A Whole Host of Special Features
Enjoying Criterion releases lies in the abundance of backstage glimpses and unique features they offer. Punch-Drunk Love doesn’t miss out on this treat. The 4K disc not only offers the newly remastered film but also includes a standard Blu-ray version of the movie, providing Full HD quality instead of 4K UHD. Additionally, you’ll find Blossoms & Blood, a short film by PTA made from leftover takes and alternative versions of scenes featuring Sandler and Watson, along with some deleted scenes.
One engaging aspect of the bonus content is an extended conversation with Jon Brion, the film’s composer (who also composed music for “Blossoms & Blood“). In this discussion, Brion shares a wide variety of inspirations for both him and PTA that led to the rhythmic music in the movie. The interview with Brion offers some genuinely amusing stories about his interactions and conversations with PTA, and delves deeply into the creative process. Additionally, the disc contains the original press conference from Cannes in 2002, which is sure to be enjoyable. If you’re interested in seeing Sandler at his best, pre-order “Punch-Drunk Love” now.
