As a huge fan of “The Big Bang Theory” and a music enthusiast, I find the backstory of the show’s iconic theme song to be both fascinating and melancholic. The upbeat and catchy tune we all know and love from the sitcom is just a small part of the full track written and performed by the Canadian rock band Barenaked Ladies.
Many well-known songs have gained popularity through their association with TV shows. For instance, “I’ll Be There for You,” performed by the Rembrandts, is synonymous with the hit series “Friends.” Similarly, “The Big Bang Theory” theme song, titled “The History of Everything,” is another instantly recognizable tune, brought to life by the Canadian rock band Barenaked Ladies. Although the lively rendition played during the show is often perceived as light-hearted and amusing, the complete song tells a different story. In truth, its lyrics are somewhat ominous and melancholic, foreshadowing the demise of the universe.
In “The Big Bang Theory,” the selected song segment harmonizes flawlessly with the program’s theme and Sheldon’s (Jim Parsons) string theory exploration because it touches upon the time preceding the Big Bang and the genesis of life. As viewers of the show are aware, the lyrics initiate with, “Our entire universe was in a hot, compressed state / Around fourteen billion years ago, expansion ensued.” However, the complete tune takes a grim turn after this, prophesying global turmoil caused by lethal viruses and forecasting the demise of our known universe via a massive collapse.
The original lyrics, “It expands continually outward, but at some point will reverse / Collapsing inward, neither we nor it shall survive, it won’t revere / Our wisest and most brilliant predict it will create an even greater explosion,” carry a drastically different mood than the lighthearted title “The Big Bang Theory” implies.
Barenaked Ladies had some legal trouble with the Big Bang Theory theme song
Ed Robertson and Tyler Stewart, two members of Barenaked Ladies, were delighted when Bill Prady and Chuck Lorre, creators of “The Big Bang Theory,” asked them to compose the sitcom’s theme song in 2006. According to Robertson, who spoke with CBS News, this opportunity arose after the TV executives attended one of their performances in Los Angeles. Interestingly enough, Robertson had recently completed a book by Simon Singh titled “The Big Bang: The Origin of the Universe,” and he had written a song about cosmological theory during that show. Prady and Lorre were intrigued, and after exchanging glances, they decided to recruit Barenaked Ladies for the task, making it a most fortunate turn of events.
Around half a decade after recording “The Big Bang Theory’s” theme song as part of Barenaked Ladies, Steven Page found himself embroiled in a court case. He had left the band in 2009, but in 2015, he accused his former bandmates of withholding royalties for the hit track. He claimed his share was around $1 million based on his 20% ownership. However, the judge dismissed the lawsuit without specifying any monetary exchange between Robertson and Page. Despite the legal dispute, Page performed with his ex-bandmates in a one-off concert in 2018, indicating the resolution of their differences.
