Warmer Brothers Studios and Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour director, Sam Wrench, are planning a remake of the 90s hit romance thriller, The Bodyguard. Additionally, Jonathan Abrams has been chosen to pen the script; he made his screenwriting debut with Clint Eastwood’s courtroom drama, Juror #2. No casting details have been revealed yet, but there’s a pool of versatile singers and actresses who might be interested in portraying Whitney Houston’s iconic character. The news was announced during an interview with Deadline by Warner Bros. Pictures Group co-heads, Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy.

The expertise of Wrench, who has worked on various musical productions, could significantly benefit the upcoming remake. Known for directing “Laufey’s A Night at the Symphony: Hollywood Bowl” and “A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter,” which premiered on Netflix in 2024 featuring stars like Chappell Roan, Tyla, Quinta Brunson among others, Wrench has also contributed to concert documentaries for prominent artists such as BTS, Lizzo, and Billie Eilish. His work, including a Grammy-nominated Best Music Film for Eilish’s “Billie Eilish Live At The O2,” demonstrates his deep involvement in the music industry. In an interview with Variety, Wrench expressed that he allows music to guide all aspects of concert filmmaking; perhaps this approach will be carried over when directing “The Bodyguard.

In my opinion, a concert filmmaker’s role isn’t about fabricating events or adding energy that doesn’t exist. Instead, they should focus on capturing what truly transpired, allowing the music to guide their work and shape the final product.

The job of a concert filmmaker is not to make things up or exaggerate the energy; it’s about accurately recording what happened during the performance, with the music serving as the main focus.

Back in 1992, I found myself captivated by “The Bodyguard,” a blockbuster film directed by Mick Jackson that defied the naysayers’ claims of cheesiness and soared at the box office. The story revolves around Frank Farmer, a seasoned bodyguard and ex-Secret Service agent, who was brought in to shield a renowned actress and singer, Rachel Marron, from an unidentified stalker.

Released by Warner Bros., this heart-stopping thriller premiered on November 22, 1992, and went on to gross an astonishing $411 million globally, making it the second highest-grossing film of that year. The film’s soundtrack, featuring the unparalleled vocals of Whitney Houston, sold over 50 million copies worldwide and even snatched the coveted Grammy for Album of the Year. Two tracks from the soundtrack were also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
