As a dedicated gamer and avid fan of The Boys, I have to say that this latest season has truly outdone itself in its satirical commentary on the film industry and societal issues. The opening moments of the Season 4 finale hit me right in the feels, as I’ve grown increasingly frustrated with the trend of studios shelving completed projects for tax write-offs.
This article contains spoilers for The Boys Season 4 Finale
The TV series “The Boys” doesn’t hold back when poking fun at real-world issues, and during the Season 4 finale, it was the film industry that received some harsh criticism. A notable comment, included in the opening montage of newsreels, directly addressed the current practice of studios withdrawing finished productions to claim tax deductions instead.
In the final episode of The Boys, there were plentiful scenes of shattered heads, mangled bodies, and the expected amusing mayhem that the show is known for. However, prior to the gore and action, the series took a stand against studios like Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix. These production companies have completed films only to later abandon them, infuriating not just fans but also the individuals involved in making these projects.
As an avid fan of the show, I was thrilled when they announced the upcoming movie about A-Train’s early life, featuring none other than Will Ferrell. But my excitement was short-lived as I heard the shocking news during the finale’s opening. The report stated, “Vought Studios shockingly cancels their completed film, Training A-Train.” The scene then shifted to Ashley Barrett, Vought’s CEO, delivering a cutting remark about such unexpected cancellations.
We just knew we would make more from the write-off
In Season 4 of “The Boys,” showrunner Eric Kripke continues to challenge the film industry with the series’ content, making it clearer than ever that the show’s universe reflects more of reality than some may be willing to acknowledge.
The Boys Has Taken Criticism for Its Political Storylines
The current installment of “The Boys” on Prime Video has been a massive hit in terms of audience engagement, surpassing the viewership of most other shows on the platform and even competing with top titles on various streaming services. However, the overtly political themes in Season 4 have sparked heated debates among some fans online.
As a devoted fan, I’ve noticed that Kripke has remained firm in his support for “The Boys,” leaving viewers with a clear-cut decision: either watch or don’t. Not long after the show made its comeback, Kripke publicly addressed those who have criticized the series and those who have chosen to admire Homelander as a role model.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last June, Kripe expressed his indifference towards individuals excessively criticizing “The Boys” online for being too “woke.” He stated:
I’ve spent years honing my creative vision, and when I put that vision into my show, I don’t hold back. Some viewers may label it as “woke” or whatever they please, but I won’t change a thing for them. If Homelander comes across as the hero to certain audiences, well, that’s their interpretation. My work is far from subtle, and if that’s the takeaway, then so be it. However, my experiences and intentions behind the show are richer and more complex than a simple label can capture. So, for those who truly want to engage with the depth of our storytelling, I invite you to keep an open mind.
You can now watch the entirety of “The Boys” Season 4, plus all the earlier seasons, on Amazon Prime Video.
