As a seasoned gamer who’s survived countless nights of terror in the digital realm, I can confidently say that The Casting of Frank Stone has managed to send shivers down my spine even before its official release. With a background drenched in Supermassive Games’ previous chilling masterpieces, this new horror experience promises more of the same – and that, dear readers, is exactly what I crave!
As a thrill-seeker at heart, I find that even the most ardent non-horror enthusiasts secretly delight in the chill that creeps down their spine. While movies and novels can undeniably stimulate our senses, nothing quite matches the electrifying tension of being the master of your own destiny in a horror game.
Supermassive Games consistently lead in the realm of horror games centered around Quick Time Events, boasting successful titles such as Until Dawn and The Quarry. Their latest offering, The Casting of Frank Stone, now takes terror to a new level within the chilling atmosphere of Dead by Daylight.
If you’re already fond of Supermassive’s work, Frank Stone appears to offer similar quality, which is great. And if you haven’t explored their eerie world yet, this could be an excellent introduction point for you.
Don’t go down to the mill at night
In a preview version of the game, I could only play a brief part that felt like the beginning. Yet, it has definitely piqued my curiosity about what’s ahead in the full version.
Instead of unfolding primarily in the present-day around the ominous presence of a murderer in the small town of Cedar Hills, this sneak peek delves into the past, focusing on the genuine Frank Stone and the enigma surrounding a missing child.
In this scenario, you find yourself assuming the character of Sam, a solitary police officer, who ventures into an almost deserted mill during the dead of night. As he explores, he encounters mysterious inhabitants and ominous hallways. The pulse-pounding tension remains similar to Supermassive’s previous works, with challenging decisions to make and crucial quick-time events to navigate successfully.
This kind of setup is ideal for playing either solo in a dimly lit room with headphones or with a group of friends on the couch, because the thrill of making the correct decision and the despair if you fail to hit a Quick Time Event is just as exciting (and terrifying!) whether you’re alone or among others.
In the brief gaming experience I had, I was pleasantly surprised to find the game unapologetically graphic, with heaps of gruesome imagery and quite disturbing death sequences within the first 45 minutes alone. I’m almost tempted (and I believe the game would encourage it) to replay multiple times, aiming for failure instead of success, as that could be just as intriguing as reaching the end and surviving.
One appealing aspect is that The Casting of Frank Stone takes place within the universe of Dead by Daylight. While the specific connections haven’t been fully explained yet, aside from a few hints, as a follower of Behaviour Interactive’s asymmetrical multiplayer game, I can’t wait to discover what characters or elements might make an appearance.
Gorgeous horror
Beyond the chilling action, what particularly caught my attention was the exceptional visual appeal of the game. While it’s not always necessary to have high-quality graphics to excel in horror, as both games and movies have demonstrated, the breathtaking imagery presented here undeniably enhances the feeling of being engrossed in the experience.
Specifically, I found delight in how effectively the beam from my flashlight illuminated the gloom of the mill, providing me with enough information while still fueling my creativity. However, running it at full capacity did put a strain on my somewhat outdated computer’s performance. If your system has the capability to handle all its features, I believe you’ll find it quite enjoyable.
The Verdict
If you’re looking for a new game to scare you this Halloween then I think you’ll be in for a treat with The Casting of Frank Stone.
From my brief encounter with the game, I’m optimistic that Supermassive Games will continue to deliver a seamless experience, constructing an immersive setting filled with consequential choices that will leave you gripped in anticipation.
