Filmed within a single day using a Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 12K camera and Tokina Cinema Vista Prime Lenses, the idea for Barnett’s short film titled The Crossing Over Express was sparked after being inspired by the emotional scene in Season 1 finale of The Bear, where Carmy reads a letter from Mikey. Initially, the concept for this short film came to mind when Barnett received an unexpected text from an unknown number, which led him to a video of his late mother who passed away during his teenage years.

When I turned 17, my mother passed away. I have very few photographs and no videos of her. A couple of years ago, on my birthday, I received a text from an unknown number. It just said “happy birthday” along with a YouTube link. I clicked it, and my heart nearly stopped. To my astonishment, it was my mother. I had to pull over immediately. She was expressing her pride in me and speculating about what I might become – perhaps a police officer, a preacher, or even a jester. I couldn’t believe it.

It’s interesting to note that the random phone call turned out to be from Jon’s father, who had discovered an old VHS tape containing a video from a 1999 school event. I was 16 at the time. This incident made me ponder… what if we could have one more heart-to-heart talk with someone we’ve lost?

The film, shared by Barnett on X (previously Twitter) a few days ago and now on YouTube’s Short of the Week, has been moving countless hearts on social media. It demonstrates that great things can be achieved even with minimal resources when budgets are tight – a lesson big Hollywood studios might want to consider before green-lighting their next $200 million blockbuster.

Boasting over two decades of industry expertise, Barnett and Tanner Thomason have made notable appearances in shows like NCIS: Los Angeles and For All Mankind on Apple TV+. They’ve also written scripts for films such as Faith Based and produced projects like the upcoming 2023 action-thriller Your Lucky Day. Their unwavering love for filmmaking, fueled even more by the success of The Crossing Over Express, suggests that they are far from slowing down. In fact, this momentum calls for Hollywood to recognize their potential and offer them a chance to contribute to larger projects that will undoubtedly shine a brighter spotlight on their exceptional abilities.
