‘The Daily Show’ and Jon Stewart Return to Emmys Talk Series Race

As a longtime fan of Jon Stewart and his groundbreaking work on The Daily Show, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and disappointment with this year’s Emmy nominations. On one hand, it’s fantastic to see Stewart and The Daily Show recognized once again in the best variety talk series category. After all, during his original tenure from 1999-2015, The Daily Show dominated the category with an impressive 11 wins.

On Wednesday morning, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart was once again up for the best variety talk series award at the 2024 Emmys. Notably, there were some other shows that didn’t make it to the nominee list.

At the 2024 Emmys, “The Daily Show” – last year’s talk series Emmy winner for Trevor Noah’s final tenure as host – will face competition from “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “Late Night With Seth Meyers,” and “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.” All four shows were nominated in the same category the previous year, due to a shift in Emmy rules that distinguished talk shows centered around hosts and guests from scripted variety series like HBO’s “Last Week Tonight,” which was reclassified and took home the award in its new category.

Last year, Stewart received a nomination in the talk series category for his Apple TV+ show, “The Problem With Jon Stewart.” Unfortunately, the show had been canceled before the Emmy awards in January.

Emmy voters limited their selections to just four TV series, excluding notable contenders such as Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live,” YouTube’s “Hot Ones,” and the acclaimed but brief-running “John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in L.A.” on Netflix (available in the spring). “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” was also overlooked, marking a continued absence of nominations for this show that began in 2017.

Stewart rejoined “The Daily Show” on Channel 4 Comedy in February, appearing as host every week, typically on Mondays. The show’s correspondents handle the other four days of the week. During Stewart’s initial tenure from 1999 to 2015, “The Daily Show” ruled the Emmy Awards for variety series with a total of 11 wins, securing a stunning streak of 10 consecutive victories between 2003 and 2012.
