As a die-hard DC fan with decades of comics under my belt, I can’t help but feel a thrill of excitement when it comes to James Gunn’s “Superman.” The trailer has given us glimpses of some familiar faces and newcomers alike, but one character that caught my eye was the elusive Engineer, played by María Gabriela de Faría.
The trailer for James Gunn’s “Superman” movie is out now, offering a wealth of details about the upcoming superhero film. Among the main cast members we see, apart from Superman (David Corenswet), there are intriguing glimpses of characters like Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced). However, one crucial character might have gone unnoticed by some fans due to their brief on-screen presence.

In a broad view of the LutherCorp building, you can somewhat spot Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) peering out a window. If you scrutinize the scene outside the structure, you’ll notice someone strolling across the archway – that person is none other than the Engineer, portrayed by María Gabriela de Faría. It’s been previously announced that “Superman” will introduce the Engineer, who plays a crucial role in The Authority, another upcoming movie. Due to her small size and lack of detail in this brief appearance, we can’t glean much about her character’s aesthetic, but positioning her alongside LuthorCorp hints at where her loyalties might initially reside.
The Superman trailer suggests an alliance between Lex Luthor and The Engineer
Previously, James Gunn confirmed that Lex Luthor would serve as the main antagonist in the upcoming “Superman” movie. However, fans continue to brainstorm about potential other villains who might appear, even in minor roles. One intriguing fan theory proposes that Bizarro could make his live-action debut within the film. It’s more likely that the Engineer will take on a secondary antagonist role, given her presence in the “Superman” trailer as she is seen wandering around LuthorCorp.
The Engineer’s unique trait, beyond exceptional intelligence, is that she has nanotechnology in her blood, which enables her to transform into liquid metal. This makes her a potential threat even to Superman, and some might consider joining forces with Lex Luthor. However, since she’s the only confirmed character for the movie thus far, there’s a possibility she may grow disenchanted with Lex’s methods and strike out on her own. Later, she could either become one of the founding members or be recruited by The Authority, thereby setting the stage for their upcoming movie.
The Authority aren’t traditional villains; they’re complex characters who are more concerned with achieving their goals, even if it means causing harm or loss of life. This stands in stark contrast to Superman’s ideals. It seems like their clash is just beginning, and we won’t fully understand the Engineer’s intentions until the release of “Superman” on July 11, 2025. For now, it appears that Gunn wants to keep the Engineer shrouded in mystery.
