The Disclaimer Ending Was Incredible, But There's One Moment In Cate Blanchett's Apple TV+ Show That Surprised Me In The Best Way

As a fan who has weathered the stormy seas of television drama for decades, I can confidently say that the ending of Disclaimer is a rare gem among gems. The final episode was a masterful rollercoaster ride, leaving me reeling and exhilarated, much like the aftermath of a particularly intense therapy session.

⚠️ Warning: The following information reveals significant details about the ending of Cate Blanchett’s series. If you haven’t watched it yet, I recommend coming back after you have. Enjoy your viewing!

I finally got around to the Disclaimer ending, and I’m so glad, because this was one of the most intense and incredible experiences on the 2024 TV schedule. The Apple TV+ original series starring Cate Blanchett as a woman forced to revisit and reconcile with one of her most traumatic memories after discovering she’s a major character in a book about an affair and drowning death is fascinating from start to finish, but it really excels in the seventh and final episode.

Ever since concluding Alfonso Cuarón’s version of Renée Knight’s titled novel on my Apple TV+ account, I find myself continuously pondering over an impactful sequence toward the end of the miniseries, which left me pleasantly stunned.

What Happens In The Disclaimer Ending?

In the film titled “Disclaimer“, Cate Blanchett’s character, Catherine Ravenscroft, endures harassment from Stephen Brigstocke (Kevin Kline), a former teacher who published a book penned by his deceased wife, implicating the documentarian in their son’s death 20 years ago. As events unfold, Stephen manipulates Catherine’s husband, Robert (Sacha Baron Cohen), and son, Nicholas (Kodi Smit-McPhee), into suspecting that she had an affair with his son on the day before he tragically drowned while saving her child.

However, it’s been discovered that the occurrences depicted in the book are actually fabrications concocted by the Brigstocke family. In truth, their son had brutally attacked Catherine and coerced her into taking explicit photos (the ones sent to Robert and Nicholas during the course of the story). A significant twist unfolds later when Stephen, who initially intended to kill Nicholas after attempting to drive the now 25-year-old to take his own life, experiences a change of heart upon hearing the boy plead for his mother as he regained consciousness from a coma.

Following the distressing event, Robert endeavors to express his apologies to his wife for not trusting or hearing her out when she shared the news about the alleged affair. However, she firmly rejects his attempts and states that she cannot find it within herself to forgive him. In the concluding scene, Catherine – who appears to be separated from Robert – experiences a heartfelt moment with Nicholas.

Why I Thought Catherine Not Forgiving Robert Was Such A Powerful And Surprising Moment

Until the very end of the Disclaimer‘s conclusion, I had been apprehensive that Catherine might choose to overlook her husband’s actions during one of the most distressing incidents in her life, other than their first marriage. However, this doesn’t transpire. Instead, Cuarón provides a potent scene where a composed and resilient (yet formidable) Catherine informs Robert that she is unable to grant him forgiveness because it seems he finds it easier to accept the notion of someone violating her, rather than someone bringing her joy. This leaves her questioning whether he secretly welcomes her rape as an alternative to his infidelity.

Experiencing this potent and awe-inspiring instance deepened my admiration for the series and Catherine’s tale even more. For the first time in her life, she chose honesty with herself and those dear to her, which led to the difficult decision of divorcing her husband after 25 years of marriage. He was given ample opportunities to rectify things, to truly hear her out, but his lack of trust in her was unbearable for her any longer.

What Cate Blanchett Has Said About Catherine’s Decision To Not Reconcile With Robert

The skillful manner in which the Disclaimer finale subtly manipulates your emotions into thinking Catherine will forgive Robert is impressive. In fact, if you revisit Catherine’s physical expressions during that scene, you’ll notice she doesn’t get angry, doesn’t shout, and instead, appears to be consoling her husband. This could very well have been the intention of Cate Blanchett in this particular scene, as she mentioned in her interview with Variety.

Initially, I had anticipated that the opening of the scene might give the impression of a reconciliation taking place. However, as the scene unfolds, she comes to understand that reconciliation may not be possible for her. It’s important to clarify that my intention was not to portray her seeking revenge on the man who disbelieved her. Rather, women are typically striving for clarity and self-understanding in such situations.

Previously in the conversation, Blanchett noted that the scene offered a form of reconciliation for Catherine, not just with herself but also with her past. This added depth to the final chapter of the series, significantly increasing its impact.

As a passionate gamer, I’ve just completed “Disclaimer,” an engaging series that packed a punch with its climactic twist. But here’s the good news for fellow enthusiasts like me: There are still a host of captivating Apple TV+ shows lined up on their 2025 schedule, leaving us gamers plenty to anticipate and enjoy!
