In a subtle move, the developers at Bethesda have discreetly rectified an enigma-inducing issue related to the lore of the Dark Brotherhood in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, which had previously left fans of this lore puzzled.
Warning! Potential spoilers for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered follow.
Let’s reminisce about April when The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered had an impressive debut. Shortly after its launch, players of the original beloved open-world role-playing game spotted that the entrance to the Dark Brotherhood’s Cheydinhal sanctuary door had been altered in a puzzling way that contradicted the game’s lore.
In the memorable scene from Oblivion, the significant door plays a pivotal role, particularly for those who undertook the captivating Dark Brotherhood quest. In the original Oblivion, this glowing door carries a somber ambiance and depicts the Night Mother, revered by members of the assassination-focused Dark Brotherhood, apparently killing five children. However, in the remastered version of Oblivion, the glow is absent, the atmosphere is less intense, and curiously, there are now two additional children portrayed on the door.

I feel really very disappointed with this.

Fans of The Elder Scrolls lore were quick to notice a discrepancy with the depiction of two children on the relief. According to the game’s backstory, the scene is meant to symbolize the Night Mother’s murder of her five children by Sithis, an Elder Scrolls deity symbolizing emptiness and the Void. However, in the storyline, the Night Mother was killed by the locals for killing her own offspring, eventually becoming the immortal Night Mother. This contradiction is further emphasized in Oblivion, where the Night Mother’s tomb contains skeletal remains of one adult and five children, aligning with the lore.
It was speculated whether Bethesda and Virtuos would adjust Oblivion Remastered to make the door conform to lore, and indeed, they have done so. As pointed out by PC Gamer, with the rollout of Update 1.2 in beta version on Steam, those who chose to test the patch will now find a door that aligns with lore, displaying five children instead of seven as previously depicted. Interestingly, this modification isn’t mentioned in the official patch notes provided below.
It’s anticipated that the updated version of Oblivion Remastered, upon its complete release with Update 1.2, will incorporate a brand-new door as a standard feature.
