As a film enthusiast who’s seen my fair share of action-packed shows and movies, I must say the news about The Equalizer series joining Netflix is music to my ears! Having grown up watching the original 80s show and being a fan of both the Denzel Washington films and the current series starring Queen Latifah, it’s exciting to see this franchise thriving in various forms.
Enthusiasts of a particular show have received some positive updates lately. It’s been announced that two more sequels are planned for the Denzel Washington movie franchise, and there might be spin-offs for the CBS series featuring the same character. Now, excitingly, the series has found its way onto a popular streaming platform, expanding its reach to a larger audience and potentially securing its longevity.
2021 saw the debut of a revamped television show, echoing the 80’s original bearing the same title, upon which the trilogy featuring Denzel Washington as Robert McCall was built. In this updated adaptation, Queen Latifah portrays Robyn McCall, a former CIA agent offering assistance to individuals requiring an “equalizer” in their lives. The character faces her own personal challenges, including single parenthood, while confronting wrongdoers with the same unconventional vigilante tactics that Edward Woodward employed four decades prior.
The move to put “The Equalizer” on Netflix signifies a burgeoning practice of television series being sold to streaming platforms in an exchange for services. This benefits networks by expanding their audience for top-rated shows, while streamers can fulfill their demand for fresh content with multiple-season series at the ready. Notably, Netflix has witnessed shows like “Lost” and “Suits” gain massive popularity even years after their initial television broadcasts. Despite its impressive debut in 2021, viewership of “The Equalizer” has been decreasing over recent years. A successful run on Netflix could potentially decide the fate of any further seasons beyond the current fifth season.
The Equalizer Continues to Be Popular
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, it’s astounding to reflect on how the original run of “The Equalizer” series, airing from 1985 to 1989, set the stage for not just one, but two captivating iterations gracing both our small and large screens more than three decades later. Denzel Washington first brought Robert McCall to life in the 2017 big-screen adaptation, which garnered enough interest to birth two sequels, with “The Equalizer 3” premiering in 2023, seemingly concluding the trilogy. Yet, in an unexpected twist this week, Washington announced his return as McCall for not one, but two more sequels!
I’ve informed everyone that I will create another Equalizer film, and we are currently working on four and five. It seems many people are thrilled about this – they really adore those Equalizers. However, I’ve recognized that the Equalizer series isn’t just for my audience; it’s also a personal endeavor because these films give me the opportunity to fight against the wrongdoers. When they say, ‘We can’t handle it, so you go handle it,’ I respond, ‘Yes, I will take care of them! Please, wait right here. I’ll be back shortly.’
Meanwhile, the film division of “The Equalizer” is buzzing with excitement, but at the same time, it was announced that the TV series will introduce fresh characters next year. If these new characters gain sufficient popularity, they may be spun off into their own shows. Their debut, resembling a backdoor pilot episode, is planned for springtime.
Starting from December 16th, only the initial three seasons of the show will be available on Netflix, containing a total of 46 episodes for viewers to indulge in. In the interim, Season 5 is actively airing on CBS, with fresh installments being broadcast every Sunday at 9:00 PM Eastern Time.
