As a seasoned movie critic with a heart for underdog stories and a soft spot for superheroes, I must say that Sasha Calle‘s journey as Supergirl is one for the books. Having had the privilege of witnessing the rise and fall (or rather, the twist and turn) of characters in Hollywood for many years now, I can empathize with her bittersweet feelings during the press tour for The Flash.

For actress Sasha Calle, landing the role of Supergirl was a dream come true, and she made her debut in The Flash in 2023. This was supposed to be the beginning of several appearances for Calle as Supergirl, but unexpected events occurred when James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios as co-CEOs. This led to a complete overhaul of the DC Universe (DCU), ultimately ending Calle’s journey as Supergirl. Now, the talented actress is discussing how “painful” it was to see everything fall apart.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Calle disclosed that she has agreed on a multi-picture contract to embody Supergirl. Her initial appearance in this role is set within The Flash. Although Calle felt let down by the change of direction when Gunn and Safran took charge, she remains content with her performance and grateful for the opportunity to bring the character to life.

I felt incredibly attached to that character. We often discussed her future prospects. When I agreed to play the role, it involved a multi-picture contract, which is typical for franchises. Therefore, it was devastating and perplexing when things changed. In hindsight, I understand I gave it my all.

During her tenure as Supergirl, Calle found herself in a complex and uncomfortable situation due to unexpected developments. After the announcement of a fresh exploration of the DC Universe, she was required to participate in a press tour for The Flash, leaving her uncertain about her role within the franchise’s new direction. Additionally, several characters were in a state of flux until Gunn and Safran confirmed the cast for the DC heroes. Although plans for future films had been hinted at, the specific casting decisions remained unclear. Furthermore, Calle’s navigation through the press tour was further complicated by the ongoing personal issues surrounding star Ezra Miller before the film’s debut. In essence, she was unsure of her standing within the franchise due to its shifting course.

I must admit, it was quite challenging for me. There were mixed emotions as I navigated through everything. I was thrilled about the opportunity, but there were many unresolved questions on my mind, which made it a bittersweet experience…So, I had to remind myself that I got the chance to be part of this amazing film and that I poured all my passion and effort into it. Regardless of where it goes next, I can’t let anyone else claim that. It’s something I accomplished with my heart and soul.

Originally, Supergirl was reimagined for the upcoming movie titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” by Gunn, with Milly Alcock from “House of the Dragon” set to play the character. Prior to Alcock’s casting, there were many fans who hoped Calle would continue in the role due to her well-received portrayal, despite the film receiving a mix of positive and negative reviews. Regardless of the confusion, Calle is proud of her achievement playing the role as a queer Latina actress in Hollywood, an opportunity she doesn’t take lightly. Calle stated:

Reflecting on it, I consider it incredibly magnificent. Some have suggested that a non-traditional Latina like myself couldn’t embody Supergirl. Yet, I did, and nobody can strip that achievement from me. What truly matters to me is that I made an impact. Whether you saw yourself in me or not, many people deeply related to her and adored her.

A positive outcome from these events was the development of a strong bond with Leslie Grace. Her dreams for DC’s Batgirl were dashed when the movie was written off as a tax deduction and not released. Nevertheless, they found solace in their shared experiences, and Calle acknowledges that something truly beautiful emerged amidst the disappointment.

In all honesty, I don’t know how I would have coped without Leslie. Despite her experiencing more hardship than me, she was an angel of love and kindness. Our friendship blossomed from a complicated and painful situation, but it was authentic, sincere, and kind. We were there for each other during that time, and I’m grateful we had each other then, as I am genuinely happy about our relationship.
