As a child of the 90s, I have fond memories of watching The Flintstones after school on Cartoon Network. The wacky antics and prehistoric humor of Fred, Barney, and their friends were a staple of my Saturday cartoon lineup. So when I heard about Warner Bros.’ latest attempt to revive the series, I must admit, I was a little skeptical.

Get ready to hang onto your T-rex ribs, as your beloved Stone Age crew is making a comeback! That’s correct, the iconic gang known as The Flintstones will soon be stepping back into their animated roots. This exciting news was shared at the Warner Bros. Animation Panel at LightBox on October 25th. The production company has revealed plans for a new animated project called “Meet The Flintstones.” Todd Wilderman and Hamish Grieve, with Hamish having previous success in Aardman Animation’s Flushed Away, are hard at work developing an all-new storyline for your favorite animated cave-dwellers.

Warner Bros. has faced challenges bringing the classic 60s animated family show back in contemporary media. The characters Fred, Wilma, Barney, and Betty made their live-action debut in a big-budget film from 1994, starring John Goodman, Elizabeth Perkins, Rick Moranis, and Rosie O’Donnell. Although the movie was a hit at the box office, appealing to fans of the original cartoon series, critics were unimpressed with their transition from TV to cinema. The actors didn’t reprise their roles for the live-action sequel, “The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas,” which was released in 2000 and failed at the box office. However, the original film has recently seen a surge of interest, landing on Netflix’s Top 10 list this year. It seems better late than never for its revival, doesn’t it?

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’ve been excitedly watching as Hanna-Barbera Productions’ beloved animated characters have been gradually resurfacing in contemporary media. The buzz surrounding the live-action film has long since subsided, allowing these timeless characters to reappear. Unfortunately, an animated spinoff series titled “Bedrock,” featuring Elizabeth Banks as a 20-something Pebbles Flintstone, was recently axed, leaving the future of this iconic family unclear. However, according to Collider, Warner Bros. appears optimistic about their upcoming project called “Meet The Flintstones” where we get another glimpse of Fred and Barney speeding around in their prehistoric car.

Flintstones Fans Should Be Cautiously Excited for Their Return

Supporters of “The Flintstones” may view this news with skepticism given Warner Bros.’ recent decisions. Not only did the studio cancel an entire live-action Batgirl movie, but it also indefinitely postponed a partially completed animated project. The film “Coyote vs. Acme,” starring John Cena and featuring both animation and live-action scenes, was delayed in November 2023 by Warner Bros., primarily as a tax write-off. This has left Cena and the fans feeling disheartened.

Despite a strong push from enthusiasts, Warner Bros. has yet to unveil the movie titled “Coyote vs. Acme“. This delay is causing dismay among fans of Wile E. Coyote. On a brighter note, “The Day the Earth Blew Up”, another Looney Tunes animated film, initially planned for release by Warner Bros., will now be distributed by Ketchup Entertainment in 2025.

Streaming platforms have brought back timeless live-action movies such as The Flintstones to modern audiences, indicating that Warner Bros. has renewed faith in the appeal of their nostalgic projects for today’s viewers. At a LightBox panel, Wilderman and Grieve hinted at an unexpected new Looney Tunes project, which is intriguing considering Warner Bros.’ recent history.

Fans should stay vigilant and watch Warner Bros., ensuring they won’t secretly abandon the recently unveiled project that has sparked enthusiasm among Flintstones fans. The original animated series, “The Flintstones,” can now be streamed on Tubi.
