As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that both Astro Bot and Black Myth: Wukong are games that have left a lasting impression on me. While Astro Bot was a delightful, accessible romp that showcased the capabilities of the PS5, Black Myth: Wukong took me on a dark, action-packed journey through an ancient tale reimagined with modern gameplay mechanics.
Although it may not have been the most significant game in terms of storyline, Astro Bot was still a remarkable technical triumph on PlayStation, and its victory as Game of the Year at this year’s Game Awards brought joy to many players.
Despite Astro Bot receiving accolades now, it seems the creators of Black Myth: Wukong were disheartened as they didn’t secure Game of the Year – this was presumably their aim.
Black Myth: Wukong on GOTY Snub
It seems that the director of Wukong, Feng Ji, was not satisfied as they did not receive the Game of the Year award. He expressed his disappointment in a long post on Weibo, according to VGC. In his translated post, Feng stated:
“In the end, it won the Best Action and Player’s Voice, especially the Player’s Voice, which is gratifying. But I must admit that there are disappointments and regrets… The games nominated this year are all excellent, but I really don’t understand the selection criteria for this year’s Game of the Year. I came here for nothing!”
It’s important to point out that Feng appears to be using a humorous style in his writing, which might lead some to think he’s joking. However, even those who attended the Game Awards have verified that members of the Wukong team genuinely wept when Astro Bot was announced as the winner.
Astro vs The Monkey King
In a modern, dark interpretation, the story Wukong is a retelling of the classic novel, Journey to the West. This ancient tale follows the Monkey King’s conflicts with various gods. Over time, this narrative has been reimagined numerous times, but Black Myth stands out by blending the story with elements from Soulslike games, showcasing how it can successfully merge the original story elements with gameplay inspired by Son Goku’s extraordinary abilities.
Conversely, Astro Bot was hailed as a heartfelt tribute to PlayStation, skillfully utilizing the features of the PS5 and DualSense controller to create a meticulously designed platforming adventure. However, it has received criticism for being a reimagining of Super Mario Odyssey.
It’s Still a Win
Despite not winning the prestigious Game of the Year title, Black Myth: Wukong did garner recognition by snatching up the Best Action Game and Player’s Voice Award. Unlike the GOTY award, which is determined by professionals in the gaming industry, this particular accolade is chosen through an online poll where players themselves select their preferred game.
Without a doubt, it’s common knowledge that the game Wukong has proven to be a commercial triumph, with sales exceeding 20 million units on both PC and PS5 platforms. There are whispers of an expansion slated for release in the early part of next year, but as of now, Game Science has remained tight-lipped about any official announcements regarding this matter.
Regardless of how strong Wukong was in the competition, there are many who believe Astro Bot should have taken the victory instead. While Wukong boasts a more sophisticated narrative and tone, the accessibility of Astro Bot seems unmatched by many contemporary games, making it a notable accomplishment.
The game titled “Black Myth: Wukong” can currently be played on PlayStation 5 and personal computers. A version for Xbox Series X|S will be developed in the future.
