The Goonies 2 Update: Original Cast Returning?

The Making of The Goonies 2 is underway by Warner Bros. Pictures, and star Ke Huy Quan (previously known as Data in the original film) has shared an enticing sneak peek to sustain our anticipation. At this point, details are scarce regarding the sequel to The Goonies, so these tantalizing hints will have to suffice for the time being.

On the 40th anniversary of Richard Donner’s ’80s teen action adventure movie, “The Goonies,” Quan had an interview with Entertainment Tonight. This timeless film from the 1980s tells the story of a group of youngsters on a quest for pirate treasure that could prevent their homes from being demolished. Released in 1985 under Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, it was loved by both audiences and critics, becoming a defining piece of cinema for the decade that reshaped commercial filmmaking.

Discussions regarding a sequel to The Goonies have been ongoing since the late 1980s, but nothing ever materialized. Yet, just recently, it has been officially announced that The Goonies 2 is under development, and it seems as though Richard Donner (Quan) may play a part in this upcoming project.

Cross your fingers! We have a fantastic writer working on the script. The team includes Chris Columbus and Steven Spielberg, among others who were involved in similar projects before. However, we’ve been working on this for quite some time now. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that things will go smoothly this time around, and we can move forward soon.

Quan fondly recalled his time working on The Goonies, almost four decades back when he was only 13 years old: “It was an absolute blast. All those sets were real, and as you might guess, zooming down a water slide with six other kids, we formed a strong bond during the shoot. We became like family. One of the most thrilling experiences of my life.” The actor was further questioned if he ever thought the film would become a timeless classic, to which he replied:

Initially, we anticipated greatness for the film, given Richard Donner’s direction and Steven Spielberg as producer. As expected, it promised to be exceptional. However, when it premiered, it didn’t make a massive impact at the box office. Interestingly, that year saw the release of “Back to the Future,” which was the blockbuster hit. But once it became available for home viewing, its popularity soared, and it has since become a beloved movie among fans.

Could ‘The Goonies’ Sequel Bring Back the Original Cast and Crew?

It’s uncertain at this point which original cast members will reappear in the upcoming Goonies film. The title of the movie is still up in the air, with possibilities like “The Goonies 2,” “The Goonies II,” or “The Goonies Never Say Die Again.” However, what we do know is that a sequel is under development and a script for it is being written by Potsy Ponciroli, an emerging talent in the film industry who has gained recognition primarily through his work directing music videos and commercials.

The creators of the original film, Steven Spielberg (producer) and Chris Columbus (writer), are set to produce the upcoming sequel. Lauren Shuler Donner, wife of the late Richard Donner, is serving as an executive producer. As of now, there’s no official word on whether the original cast will reprise their roles. Both Quan and Corey Feldman have voiced their interest in returning for a Goonies sequel, and it seems they might be part of it, though it’s premature to confirm that the whole gang is back for another adventure.

Following years of uncertainty, it appears that Warner Bros. is finally working on a sequel to the beloved film “Goonies”. This news, as you might imagine, is significant at this moment. Despite numerous expressions of interest from the original cast, Warner Bs had previously been tight-lipped about the project. However, an announcement from Warner Bros. was a welcome development. That being said, there will likely be some modifications for the sequel since it’s uncertain if the original Goonies gang will be reunited. After all, what would “Goonies 2” be without Chunk, Mikey, Data, Mouth, and the rest?
