Although Love Hurts may not be the long-awaited sequel to The Goonies that fans have been anticipating, it will undoubtedly stir up nostalgia for those who enjoyed the 1985 adventure. As Quan was discussing potential candidates for the character of Cliff, who is the boss of Quan’s character, producers suggested Sean Astin as a possibility. Upon hearing his name, Quan exclaimed, “Oh my God, we have to make that happen!” It seems Astin was open to a reunion with Data/Mikey, but Quan attempted to keep his appearance a secret.
Originally, I sent a message to Sean saying, “Hey pal, it’s been 40 years since we worked together. It would be amazing if we could do it again!” He didn’t reply right away, but later agreed to the production without telling me directly. This was a delightful surprise as he seemed to want to maintain the excitement. I was on tenterhooks, and then the producer contacted me and announced, “Sean is in!” To which I exclaimed, “Oh my goodness, that’s fantastic!
Love Hurts Casts Ke Huy Quan as an Action Hero
On the day they were shooting, an additional Goonie unexpectedly joined the set to observe filming. While Jeff Cohen is known for portraying Chunk, the enthusiastic Truffle Shuffle dancer in the movie, he quit acting shortly afterwards. Now, he works as a lawyer in entertainment, and Quan is one of his clients. Although Cohen himself isn’t seen on screen, being there during the filming with Sean Astin added an indelible memory to Quan’s experience.
He expressed that being on set felt just like it did back when we were kids making The Goonies. That’s how it felt when I worked with Sean, too. I found myself staring at Mikey once more, and I think he was gazing at Data again. It was undoubtedly one of the most joyful days on a film set that I have ever experienced.
In the movie “Love Hurts“, the character Quan takes on the role of Marvin Gable, a highly accomplished real estate agent in Milwaukee. However, he harbors a troubling secret from his past – he was once an assassin. Trouble brews as his former partner, portrayed by Ariana DuBose from “West Side Story“, reappears, threatening to disrupt his tranquil existence. His dreams of a peaceful life are shattered when his sibling, played by Daniel Wu from “Westworld“, a crime lord, seeks revenge for his betrayal.
The movie represents the initial directorial venture of Jonathan Eusebio, a professional who had earlier specialized in stunt performances and fight coordination for films such as Deadpool 2, The Expendables, and the initial John Wick trilogy. Eusebio’s dedication to top-tier fight choreography prompted Quan to request that he perform his own stunts, aiming for authenticity in the process.
Speaking about the filmmaking process, he shared, “It was draining, both mentally and physically, and I ended up bruised daily. I can only hope that the hard work we invested in this project will be felt by viewers as they watch it.
