As a movie critic, I’m thrilled to share that Amazon’s upcoming biopic series, “The Greatest,” is beefing up its stellar cast. This series, which delves into the life of Muhammad Ali both in and out of the ring, announced its latest addition—one of Ali’s most formidable opponents in the boxing world.
Initially unveiled in July 2024, “The Greatest” has already attracted significant attention, with Jaalen Best, known for his role in “American Horror Story,” stepping into the gloves to portray Muhammad Ali. However, every great champion needs worthy adversaries, and “The Greatest” just cast one of Ali’s most recognized rivals.
By the given deadline, Amin Joseph will portray Sonny Liston in the upcoming biographical film “The Greatest.” Joseph gained recognition for his performances in FX’s series “Snowfall” and the movie “To Live and Die and Live.” Prior to facing Muhammad Ali, Liston held the Heavyweight championship title, and their first match is considered one of Ali’s most legendary fights, alongside the Rumble in the Jungle against George Foreman and his battles with Joe Frazier.
Michael B. Jordan, known for his role in “Creed,” and Ben Watkins are executive producing a series called “The Greatest.” Additionally, Lonnie Ali, Muhammad Ali’s wife, is also serving as an executive producer on this project. The show will delve into some of Muhammad Ali’s most significant public moments during his career, as well as aspects of his life outside the ring. According to the official summary, the series aims to portray:
Ali’s incredible wins and losses, which etched him into legend within and beyond the ring, are widely known, yet it’s the unseen moments away from the limelight that truly pulse through his story. The world recalls an icon, but ‘The Greatest’ delves deeper, revealing a man, a spouse, a parent, a sibling, and a child.
Who Was Sonny Liston?
Sonny Liston was one of Muhammad Ali’s earliest opponents, whom Ali defeated to claim his first Heavyweight title in 1964. At the time, Ali was on the rise, but Liston was seen as the boxer who could defeat him. Known as one of the greatest heavyweights ever, Liston boasted a remarkable record of 56 wins and only 5 losses, with 2 of those defeats coming at the hands of Ali. Incredibly, 37 of his victories were by knockout. Outside the ring, however, Liston was often in trouble. He was linked to several mobsters and faced numerous charges for armed robbery and assaulting police officers. There is a rumor among boxing enthusiasts that he even threatened Ali with a gun, although this story remains debated.
Omari Hardwick is set to depict Cassius Clay Sr., the father of Muhammad Ali, with Dana Gourrier portraying his mother, Odessa Clay. As of now, there’s no confirmed air date for The Greatest series. This upcoming series isn’t the first biopic about the life of Muhammad Ali; in 2001, Will Smith starred as The Champ in the Michael Mann-directed film, Ali, which earned two Oscar nominations – one for Smith’s outstanding portrayal of Ali himself.
