Hulu is all set to delve deeper into the world of dystopia called Gilead with “The Testaments,” the long-awaited sequel to “The Handmaid’s Tale“. The show has recently added nine new actors to its roster, including Mabel Li and Amy Seimetz, who will be joining previously announced cast members such as Chase Infiniti, Lucy Halliday, Ann Dowd (returning as Aunt Lydia), Rowan Blanchard, and Mattea Conforti. The other seven actors completing the ensemble are Brad Alexander, Zarrin Darnell-Martin, Eva Foote, Isolde Ardies, Shechinah Mpumlwana, Birva Pandya, and Kira Guloien.
According to Margaret Atwood’s 2019 novel titled “The Testaments,” which serves as a sequel to “The Handmaid’s Tale,” the story unfolds fifteen years later. The narrative is presented through the eyes of three female characters: Aunt Lydia, Agnes Jemima, and Daisy. This tale is set within the oppressive regime of Gilead, a dystopian nation. It delves into how individuals resist oppression and explores themes of control.
As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be stepping into the role of Aunt Vidala, a character known for her firm discipline and next in line for the women’s domain in Gilead. Known for her impressive work in films like “Alien: Covenant,” “Pet Sematary,” and “Stranger Things,” Carla Gugino will bring Paula to life. Paula, who’s recently married a high-ranking Commander, has seen her social status soar. However, her seemingly perfect life becomes complex with the arrival of her step-daughter.
Alexander assumes the role of Garth, a youthful military leader; Darnell-Martin portrays Aunt Gabbana, Aunt Vidala’s trusted assistant; Foote embodies Aunt Estee, the “hip Aunt”; Ardies acts as Hulda, an aspiring young girl; Mpumlwana takes on Jehosheba, a rival classmate from a prestigious family aiming for a high-status union; and Guloien plays Rosa, who serves as a maternal influence to Agnes.
Why ‘The Testaments’ is a Welcome Streaming Addition
Viewers have been anxiously awaiting more of “The Handmaid’s Tale” because it strongly resonates with audiences as it delves into societal and political issues like women’s rights, authoritarianism, and religious extremism – topics that are still highly relevant today. Throughout its five-season journey, this dystopian series has garnered widespread critical acclaim and amassed a wealth of awards, including Primetime Emmy Awards for Best Drama Series and acting honors for Elizabeth Moss and Dowd.
Fans of the series can anticipate Dowd’s comeback with equal excitement. She has garnered significant acclaim for her acting, and in The Testaments, we delve deeper into Aunt Lydia’s past, offering viewers a more comprehensive insight into her character.
The Testaments was developed by Bruce Miller and co-produced by Warren Littlefield, Steve Stark, Shana Stein, Maya Goldsmith, John Weber, Sheila Hockin, Daniel Wilson, Fran Sears, and Mike Barker. Barker will also take on the role of director for the first three episodes of the follow-up series. Moss, who plays June Osborne in The Handmaid’s Tale, is also an executive producer for this sequel. Priscilla Poriand shares the role of co-executive producer. The production company behind The Testaments is MGM Television.
Beginning April 8th, the sixth and concluding season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” premieres on Hulu. If June survives, fans might catch her appearing as a guest star in the follow-up series. The filming for “The Testaments” starts a day earlier, on April 7th.
