The Hilarious TV Show That Was Canceled But Just Won’t Go Away

“How many fingers am I holding up?” asks the referee mid-fight.

“Thursday,” the dazed boxer answers.

On “Police Squad!”, aired in 1982 on ABC, you’d find that joke wasn’t alone. This show was where the creative team behind “Airplane!” – David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker (ZAZ) – joined forces again to make fun of contemporary police dramas. They had previously revolutionized big-screen comedy with their 1980 film by flooding audiences with jokes.

In the series, they reunited with the notable actor Leslie Nielsen from “Airplane!”, giving him the role of the fearless Lt. Frank Drebin. Throughout the show, his determined police character navigated a range of comedic situations, yet maintained an unwavering seriousness, never breaking into a smile.

That was the beauty of the former straight man’s performance.

The Police Squad! series delivered six outstanding episodes, each one cleverly disrupting the traditional cop show structure with side-splitting humor.

The ABC executives decided the program was overly challenging for viewers, so they quickly cancelled it. Such is the nature of show business, where numerous promising shows fail to make it big.

Except the ZAZ team refused to let the concept die.

In a later iteration, they renamed it “The Naked Gun.” When it was released in 1988, audiences were receptive to Frank and his companions, with the film featuring O.J. Simpson as a co-star. This movie, notoriously, became a massive success and opened the door for two follow-up films.

Now, naturally, Hollywood is rebooting the franchise.

In this new take on “The Naked Gun” series, Liam Neeson plays the role of Frank Drebin’s son. This modern adaptation aims to bring the offbeat comedy of the franchise to a fresh audience, as the original films may have been somewhat inappropriate at times.

This week, the initial preview was unveiled, subtly hinting at connections to Simpson’s past involvement with the series.

Lately, Liam Neeson has become more recognized for his roles in action films, yet he manages to hit the perfect note in the trailer. He’s set to appear alongside Pamela Anderson, who’s currently experiencing a resurgence in her career through “The Last Showgirl.

The creator of “Family Guy”, Seth MacFarlane, is a member of the creative team for the upcoming movie. Will MacFarlane’s distinctive approach dominate the film, or will “The Naked Gun” successfully honor the style of its creators, ZAZ?

We’ll find out when “The Naked Gun” hits theaters Aug. 1.
