‘The Hunger Games’ Stage Show Set to Open in London in Fall 2025

The stage adaptation of The Hunger Games is now set to premiere this fall in London

Performance of “The Adaptation,” drawn from Suzanne Collins’ initial novel and the Lionsgate film, is scheduled to start on October 20, 2025 at the Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre. This 1,200-capacity theater was constructed expressly for this production.

Beginning Oct. 20, 2025, “The Adaptation,” inspired by Suzanne Collins’ first book and Lionsgate film, will take the stage at Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre. This theater was custom-made to accommodate this production, with a seating capacity of 1,200.

The stage version of the play was penned by Conor McPherson, a renowned playwright known for his works like “The Weir”, “Shining City” and “The Seafarer”, and will be helmed by Matthew Dunster, who has directed plays such as “2:22 – A Ghost Story”, “Hangmen” and “The Pillowman”.

Or, more concisely:

The play is being brought to the stage by Conor McPherson (of “The Weir”, “Shining City”, and “The Seafarer”) and Matthew Dunster (“2:22 – A Ghost Story”, “Hangmen”, “The Pillowman”).

The performance is scheduled to debut in London, having been initially planned for 2016, and later for autumn 2024. Tickets will be available from March 27th.

The stage adaptation follows the success of a film series based on five books that earned over $3.4 billion globally at the box office. Author Collins is planning to publish a new book, “Sunrise on the Reaping,” on March 18, 2025, and Lionsgate has scheduled the movie adaptation for release on November 20, 2026. This will mark another popular screen franchise making its way to the stage, joining adaptations like “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” and “Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but feel excited that “The Hunger Games” has been entrusted to the creative minds of playwright Conor McPherson and director Matthew Dunster. Conor’s adaptation is nothing short of brilliant, offering a fresh perspective that sets it apart from the original screenplay. And with Matthew at the helm, his immersive and dynamic staging promises a unique, exhilarating journey for audiences to delve into the story in an entirely new way.

The play has been under development by the team for over a year. A sneak peek video reveals actors performing acrobatics and combat scenes on the walls, and members of the creative crew expressed that viewers will feel immersed in the performance due to being so close to the action in the upcoming theater. They mentioned that the cast will even engage in fights just meters away from the audience.

Conor McPherson skillfully extracts the intensity and depth from the book and film version of “The Hunger Games” and delivers a play that is characteristically tense and risky, as he is well-known for. He respects the authentic voice of Katniss Everdeen and places her at the heart of the story. For more than a year, we’ve been refining this play with our exceptional creative team, focusing on developing a theatrical language that will captivate audiences as powerfully and edgy as Suzanne Collins’ novel and as passionate and exhilarating as the movie. However, we plan to give it our own unique touch – in the realm of theatre. Our production of “The Hunger Games” aims to be distinctively and exhilaratingly theatrical, said Dunster.

The creative team is made up of set designer Miriam Buether, costume designer Moi Tran, choreographer Charlotte Broom, lighting designer Lucy Carter, sound designer Ian Dickinson (from Autograph), video designer Tal Rosner, illusionist Chris Fisher, and fight director Kev McCurdy.

The production companies responsible for “The Hunger Games” are: Tristan Baker and Charlie Parsons at Runaway Entertainment, Oliver Royds at BOS Productions, and Isobel David (in an agreement with Lionsgate).
