‘The Idol’ Wins Emmy Despite Backlash and Cancellation

As a seasoned gamer who has seen more than my fair share of TV shows and their behind-the-scenes drama, I must say that the saga of The Idol is one for the books. Here we have a show that, despite being canceled after just one season, managed to snatch an Emmy award – quite a feat, indeed!

Although The Idol was a contentious production for HBO, it has since earned an Emmy award.

On the second night of the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys held on Sunday, my favorite show, The Idol, surprisingly took home the award for outstanding choreography in scripted programming. This triumph came despite stiff competition from shows like Only Murders in the Building, Palm Royale, and Physical. What’s even more surprising is that The Idol, which ended after just one season, now has more Emmys than critically-adored series such as The Wire (which was nominated for the Emmys on two occasions) and Better Call Saul (with a massive 53 nominations but no wins). As a gamer, it’s always thrilling to see an underdog win!

In July, McNeely expressed her feelings about her Emmy nomination, being the only one for “The Idol,” to The Hollywood Reporter. She admitted that she was pleasantly surprised, but she is absolutely thrilled and excited beyond belief, and feels deeply honored to be recognized for her work. Additionally, she’s happy to be among the other choreographers in the running because they are all incredibly gifted.

McNeely confessed that the negative response the series received had led her to believe that The Idol might not receive a nomination, given that it was her first foray into TV production. She went on to say, “I’ve been involved in films and numerous music videos and tours, but I didn’t anticipate receiving a nomination for my initial TV project. However, with the extended dance sequences that were such a prominent feature of the episode [‘Dollhouse’], I was definitely hoping for the best.

Upon learning about her nomination, McNeely couldn’t help but shed a few tears and immediately contacted her agent and family to share this significant achievement. She expressed, “It was truly incredible!

In August 2023, it was confirmed that “The Idol” would not be renewed for another season, due to unfavorable feedback from both critics and viewers. “After careful deliberation,” stated a representative of HBO, “we have jointly decided with the creators and producers not to proceed with a second season. We express our heartfelt gratitude to the creative team, cast, and crew for their outstanding effort.

The series concluded following publication of a revealing article in Rolling Stone that highlighted production difficulties, such as script revisions transforming the narrative from a young woman’s journey to self-discovery amidst industry toxicity to a problematic “romantic tale.” Subsequent to this exposé, Lily Rose Depp, lead actress of The Idol, publicly refuted any on-set turmoil, asserting that Levinson had offered her consistent support and respect during the production process.
