As a devoted fan of the Joker and his enigmatic portrayal in the 2019 film, I was eagerly anticipating the release of “Joker: Folie à Deux.” Having followed Joaquin Phoenix’s exceptional performance and Lady Gaga’s captivating presence since their first appearance on the silver screen, I held high hopes for this sequel. Alas, my excitement was quickly dampened as I found myself utterly disappointed with the musical adaptation of this dark tale.

Enthusiasm for the upcoming movie “Joker: Folie à Deux” soared to great heights, as fans of the initial film, “Joker,” yearned for more of the intricate DC character. The 2019 film masterpiece left critics and DC enthusiasts astounded by Phillips’ skill in delving into the Joker’s psyche, drawing parallels to real-world society, and portraying him as a complex figure beyond just a villain in the Batman universe. With Joaquin Phoenix reprising his role as the Joker, also known as Arthur Fleck, another beloved Batman adversary prepared for a comeback on the silver screen. Notably, it was announced that Harley Quinn would enter the Joker’s world, and Lady Gaga was chosen to embody this portrayal of the Joker’s criminal accomplice.

Initially, when it was revealed that Lady Gaga would be part of the sequel and it would incorporate music, fans of the original movie were uncertain due to concerns that these changes might dilute the original film’s somber and realistic tone. Similarly, Gaga’s fans had reservations about her role because they felt it wouldn’t showcase her strengths adequately. After the film’s release, their doubts seemed justified as both Gaga’s fans and critics found issues with the movie.

Lady Gaga Was Misused in the Joker Sequel

Lady Gaga’s foray into cinema has been nothing less than remarkable. Starting with her initial appearance on the silver screen in ‘A Star is Born’, followed by her portrayal of Patrizia Reggiani in ‘House of Gucci’, Gaga’s acting versatility has demonstrated her capacity to embody intricate, multidimensional characters and deliver outstanding dramatic presentations. Her emotive performances have garnered praise from critics and cemented her status in the film industry. However, some were left wondering if she would be given the opportunity to fully display her skills when cast as Lee Quinzel, Harley Quinn, in the subsequent movie.

The problem doesn’t stem from Lady Gaga’s acting, but rather the way the film was directed and its overall tone. Phillips failed to deliver a fully developed character for Gaga, as her role seemed shallow by the time the movie reached its second act. She became a stereotypical female character, primarily existing to support a male protagonist’s delusions. This trope has been around for ages, and unfortunately, Phillips seems to have followed this predictable narrative path, undermining Gaga’s talent and underutilizing Harley Quinn. While it could be argued that this was an intentional commentary on society and men, in today’s context, such stories can be told without compromising the female character.

Phillips’ choice to turn his sequel into a musical was greeted with tentative enthusiasm, considering the success of the original film and Lady Gaga’s participation. However, it turned out that Phillips’ expertise wasn’t fully demonstrated in this case. The musical segments fell flat and failed to advance the narrative. This review also points out that Gaga’s talent was not effectively utilized in this production, as she is a music legend. She performed her part diligently and sang the songs, but the way Phillips chose to tell this story didn’t resonate with audiences as he had intended.

As a die-hard fan of the original Joker, I found myself quite taken aback by Todd Phillips’ decision to turn the sequel into a musical. Frankly, it felt like a deviation from the gritty realism that made the first movie so captivating. To me, this unexpected shift seemed less about pushing creative boundaries and more about alienating the fans who connected with the raw portrayal of mental illness and societal decay in the original film. If the musical aspect had been executed flawlessly, it might not have felt so jarring or disconnected from its predecessor.

The teaser for “Joker: Folie à Deux” sparked great anticipation among fans of the comic book personalities and Lady Gaga. Fans were led to believe they would witness a gritty examination of the Joker and Harley Quinn’s bond, along with music integration to further probe into the Joker’s troubled mind, but ultimately, these expectations were not fulfilled.

In the film “Joker: Folie à Deux,” it appears that Lady Gaga’s part was reduced significantly compared to what was suggested in the trailers, leaving many viewers feeling unsatisfied with the musical elements of her performance. Unfortunately, director Todd Phillips fell short by not giving Gaga’s character the attention and development it deserved, relegating her to a secondary role rather than presenting a Harley Quinn who stands equally alongside the Joker. The movie is currently playing in cinemas.
