The Last of Us Director Says His (Lying) Parents Influenced the Ending of the First Game

In the finale of the initial series of ‘The Last of Us‘, Joel deceived Ellie regarding the Fireflies; much like any captivating narrative, the subsequent season will explore the repercussions of this deceit.

It’s interesting to note that the falsehood Joel shares with Ellie in the story holds a deeply personal significance for director Neil Druckmann. He reveals that the conclusion of their narrative stemmed from his own experience, as his parents once deceived him during his younger years.

“I Know They Were Trying to Do the Right Thing”

In a recent conversation with CheCHAT, Druckmann discussed the writing process for The Last of Us. Though he’s confident that Joel will have to kill the doctor to secure a cure, he’s still grappling with the story’s conclusion, where Joel deceives Ellie about the events involving the Fireflies. According to Druckmann:

Initially, I found myself pondering over the final sequence and wondering, “What transpires here?” As I started composing that part, something unexpected flowed from me. This unexpected outpouring turned out to be a fabrication – a scenario where Ellie confronts Joel about the truth, only for him to deny it and deceive her entirely.

Later on, Druckmann reminisces about a period in his youth when his beloved pet passed away. His parents chose to conceal the truth from him, leading him to believe that his dog was still alive. It wasn’t until a neighbor sympathetically extended their condolences to Druckmann unaware of the deception, that he discovered the truth about his canine companion.

“I faced great difficulty because they didn’t disclose the truth to me, especially when we relocated to the United States without my knowledge. This wasn’t the first time they kept secrets for my supposed protection; it was only later that I discovered our move was permanent. It was a devastating revelation and a huge shock, leading to a year of depression afterward.

It All Fell Into Place

In a particular scenario, following Joel’s rescue of Ellie from the Fireflies and his subsequent elimination of their group, Ellie inquires about the situation. Joel explains that among the Fireflies were several immune individuals, but they failed to develop a cure, leading them to abandon the pursuit. Subsequently, raiders arrived, forcing Joel to hastily evacuate Ellie from the area.

Druckmann explains, “These types of deceits, though I understand they were attempting to act honorably, didn’t sit well with me. On some unconscious level, it seemed natural – it just felt like it was meant to be, and in that moment, I knew this was the conclusion. I can’t explain why, but I sensed that this was it.

In essence, numerous commenters found Joel’s actions in the story to be quite understandable, yet those familiar with the game are aware that such actions would ultimately lead to tragic outcomes.

It’s uncertain exactly when the series will unveil this major plot point, but given its close adherence to the original game, we can expect a significant revelation to occur around the end of the season.

The Last of Us Season 2 premieres on Max on April 13.
