In the second season of HBO’s “The Last of Us,” Bella Ramsey’s character, Ellie, encounters a lot of excitement, sorrow, and upheaval.
But a quiet scene from Sunday’s third episode was actually the toughest for them to shoot.
Ramsey mentioned that the moment when Ellie broke down mourning Joel, played by Pedro Pascal, while sniffing one of his coats in the wardrobe, was the scene they found most challenging to execute convincingly.
You know, it was incredibly challenging for the 21-year-old Emmy nominee to express that particular [scene], as she finds it difficult to cry in front of others. While she can manage a single tear, genuine sobbing doesn’t come naturally to her. She rarely shows emotion in public, and even those closest to her seldom witness her tears. So, the thought of performing such an emotional scene on a crowded set, with people watching on monitors, filled her with apprehension. That specific scene was the most difficult for her to film.
But Ramsey eventually pulled it off, and what worked was rather ironic.
Ramsey mentioned that in previous crying scenes, he’d attempt to recall something deeply sad from his personal life to help him emote genuinely. However, this method doesn’t resonate with him because it distracts him from staying true to Ellie’s situation. Instead, he recalls the most joyful moments he shared with Pedro.
What always leaves me feeling melancholic is dwelling on our joyous moments,” I shared. “I found myself reminiscing about the initial encounters we shared and our entire adventure during season one, as well as the hilarious instances that made us laugh. These memories flooded my mind, but tinged with a sense of loss – not just Joel, Ellie, and me, but also Pedro. Our experiences together were so deeply interconnected for me.
Last week’s feature article in The Hollywood Reporter saw Ramsey expressing thoughts on their professional separation from Pascal.
From the beginning of the show, knowing our time together is short has made Ramsey and Pedro value their relationship more. It was a touching moment during filming that caused us to get quite emotional. Although our time on set will end, we’ll always be in each other’s lives and hearts forever.
Additionally, Ramsey shared his thoughts on taking over as the main character following the death of Pascal’s role in the popular HBO series.
Ramsey admits he doesn’t view himself as a leader, but when entrusted with responsibility, he finds it fulfilling and takes it very seriously. He enjoys setting the tone and exerting significant influence, particularly given his position on the call sheet. It’s important to him that everyone understands their value, whether they are part of the crew or cast, and that we all work as equals.
